Sarah Slinn

1758 - 1831 Author of "God with us! oh, glorious name!" in The Primitive Methodist Church Hymnal Slinn, Sarah. In the Gospel Magazine for July 1779 a hymn in 9 stanzas of 4 lines was given beginning "God with us! 0 glorious Name;" headed "Emanuel; or, God with us. By a Lady," and signed "S. S—N." In Rippon's Baptist Selection, 1787, st. i. ii. vi. iii. iv. with alterations, and in the order named, were given as No. 174, but without signature. In J. Dobell's New Selection, 1806, the same text is repeated as from Wood's Collection The same text was again repeated to modern hymnbooks, and is that now in common use. From D.Sedgwick's manscripts we find the signature "S. S—N." was filled in as Sarah Slinn by him, but his papers do not furnish any authority for the name, nor for the date of 1777 which he has attached thereto in his manuscript note to Dobell's New Selection. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Michael Morgan

b. 1948 Author of "Trees" in Psalms for All Seasons Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God). Mary Fawler Maude

1819 - 1913 Person Name: M. F. Maude (1819-1913) Author of "When of old, in lowly state" in A Missionary Hymn Book Maude, Mary Fawler, née Hooper, daughter of George Henry Hooper, of Stanmore, Middlesex, was married in 1841 to the late Joseph Maude, some time Vicar of Chirk, near Ruabon, and Hon. Canon of St. Asaph, who died in Feb. 1887. Mrs. Maude's hymns were published in her Twelve Letters on Confirmation, 1848, and in Memorials of Past Years, 1852 (privately printed). Her best known hymn, is "Thine for ever, God of love" (Confirmation). Concerning it Mrs. Maude says: -- "It was written in 1847 for my class in the Girls' Sunday School of St. Thomas, Newport, Isle of Wight, and published in 1848 at the beginning of a little book called ‘Twelve Letters on Confirmation,' by a Sunday School Teacher, and reprinted in the Memorials, 1852." [S. MSS.] The original is in 7 stanzas of 4 lines. It is usually abbreviated, and stanzas ii., iii. transposed, as in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Church Hymns, 1871; the Hymnal Companion; Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1875, Thring's Collection, 1882, and most other hymnbooks. As a hymn for Confirmation its use is extensive. The omitted stanzas are:— "Thine for ever in that day When the world shall pass away: When the trumpet note shall sound, And the nations underground "Shall the awful summons hear, Which proclaims the judgment near. Nāşīf Yāzijī

1800 - 1871 Person Name: ناصيف اليازجي Author of "مثلما قاد المجوس" in كتاب الترانيم الروحية للكنائس الإنجيلية Nasif al-Yaziji (March 25, 1800 – February 8, 1871) was a Lebanese author at the times of the Ottoman Empire and father of Ibrahim al-Yaziji. He was one of the leading figures in the Nahda movement. We was a poet, wrote and translated many hymns, and helped in translating the complete Bible into Arabic. ناصيف بن عبد الله بن جنبلاط بن سعد اليازجي (25 مارس 1800 - 8 فبراير 1871)، أديب وشاعر لبناني ولد في قرية كفر شيما، من قرى الساحل اللبناني في 25 آذار سنة 1800 م في أسرة اليازجي التي نبغ كثير من أفرادها في الفكر والأدب، وأصله من حمص. لعب دورا كبيرا في إعادة استخدام اللغة الفصحى بين العرب في القرن التاسع عشر، عمل لدى الأسرة الشهابية كاتبا وشارك في أول ترجمة الإنجيل والعهد القديم إلى العربية في العصر الحديث.
