Richard Blanchard

1925 - 2004 Person Name: Richard Blanchard (1925- ) Topics: La Vida Christian Petición y anhelo Author of "Como la mujer junto al pozo" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Richard Blanchard Born at Chungking (now Chongqing) China to Methodist missionary parents, they returned to the U S, and lived in IN and NC. In his teens he moved from Wolcottville, IN, to Tryon, NC, bringing his family with him. In his senior year of high-school he worked at a bank. He saved his money, buying war bonds, and eventually purchased lakefront property on Lake Conway in FL. He attended Davidson College for a year, then enlisted in the U S Navy. He received a medical discharge and entered Mercer University, Macon, GA. In 1946 he married Anne Carlton of Oxford, GA, who attended Wesleyan University. They had three children: Richard, Jr, Carol Ann, and Emily. After graduating from Mercer, he enrolled at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, receiving his Bachelor of Divinity that same year. In 1949 he was ordained a deacon, the next year an elder, after serving two years as pastor of the ‘Four-Church Snellville-Grayson’ circuit of the North GA Methodist Church. In 1950 he transferred to the FL circuit. He served congregations in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Holiday, and Orlando, where he retired in 1988 after serving 40 years in ministry. He was musical and played the trombone. He also became a songwriter. In the 1980s he wrote a beautiful musical called ‘Francis of Assisi’. Some of his gospel songs were published and recorded. When younger, at Snellville, he wrote a weekly column called ‘Between You and Me’ for the Wesleyan Christian Advocate newsletter. He also wrote a story called ‘The Little Star’, published in Ideals magazine. He wrote an official biography of Bishop John Branscomb for the dedication of the Branscomb Memorial Auditorium in Lakeland, FL. Besides his music, Blanchard loved boating and dining by the water. He also traveled, visiting 75 countries. He loved fine art and visited art museums when possible. He also followed sports. He collected stamps, coins, and played word games. He loved meeting and helping others. In later years he and his wife moved to Swannanoa, NC, to be near their children. He eventually died there. John Perry

Henry Percy Smith

Bournemouth, Hampshire, England, 1898) was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, England, and ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1850. He served five churches, including St. Michael's York Town in Farnborough (1851-1868), Great Barton in Suffolk (1868-1882), Christ Church in Cannes, France (1882-1892), and the Cathedral in Gibraltar (1892-1898). MARYTON is his only tune found in contemporary hymnals and is thought to be the only tune he published. Bert Polman

Edward F. Rimbault

1816 - 1876 Person Name: Edward F. Rimbault (1816-1876) Topics: La Vida Christian Petición y anhelo Arranger of "RUTHERFORD" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Edward Francis Rimbault PhD LLD United Kingdom 1816-1876. Born in Soho, London, England, son of an organist and composer of French descent, he was taught music by his father., Samuel Wesley, and Wiliam Crotch. At age 16 he became organist of the Swiss Church in Soho. He later became organist at various churches, including St Peter’s, Vere Street, and St John’s Wood Presbyterian Church. He edited many collections of music, journals, and publications of music, and arranged music compositions. In addition to editing or arranging contemporary operas, he had a strong interest in editing or arranging earlier English music. He studied the musical treatises in the library of Archbishop Tenison, one of the oldest public libraries in London. In 1838, At age 22 he began lecturing about the history of English music, and was in much demand due to the interest aroused. He did editorial work for the Percy Society, the Camden Society, the Motet Society, and the Handel Society. For the latter he edited the “Messiah”, “Saul”, and “Samson” He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and was granted membership in the Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. Gottingen University also conferred upon him a PhD. His reputation was such that he was offered a teaching position at Harvard University in the U.S., which he turned down. In 1848 he was given an honorary degree by the University of Oxford. In 1849 he published a collection of English nursery rhymes and the tunes to which they were sung. Rimbault authored 76 books, a few named here include : “Bibliotheca madrigaliana” (1847); “The pianoforte” (1860); “Early English organ builders and their works” (1865). In 1855 he co-authored “The organ- its history and construction” with John Hopkins. He did a small amount of composing as well. He wrote an operetta in 1838, and a musical drama. He also composed a large number of pianoforte scores for operas by others. He was an admirable harmonium player. Traveling to various auctions for years, he accumulated a rare collection of books. After his death his extensive collection was auctioned off in 1877, with many items going to the British Library. About 300 items were sold to an individual, and upon his death in 1888, the ‘Drexel collection’ was bequeathed to the Lenox Library (precursor of the New York Public Library). Today, the collection is part of the Music Division of the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts. He was an author, editor, arranger, composer, lithographer, translator, scribe, adapter, and bookseller. He died at London, England. No information found regarding a family. John Perry

Terrye Coelho

b. 1952 Person Name: Terrye Coelho Topics: Anhelo y Aspiración Author of "Padre, te adoro" in Celebremos Su Gloria Terrye Coelho Strom USA 1952-present. Born at Camp Roberts, CA, (a military training camp for soldiers where her father was stationed) she was musically inclined. She attended Arizona State U, Tempe, AZ, and trained as a medical assistant at Anaheim, CA. In 1971 she was converted and joined Calvary Chapel at Costa Mesa, CA. She began singing for Maranatha Music. She also plays guitar. In 1972 she and her sister, Cathy, were driving near their home to and from Newport Beach for a fun time that summer and were singing to pass the time. Terrye improvised the song (noted below). It was first sung at Calvary Chapel shortly thereafter and copyrighted that year by Maranatha Music. It quickly spread to other venues and was eventually published in about 45 hymnals. In 1978 she married James Strom, and they have four children: Cathy, Danny, David, and Michael. At one point the Stroms moved to Walnut. CA, where Terrye continued as a homemaker and lyricist. Wayne Hooper

Died: February 28, 2007, at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. Hooper sang baritone with the King’s Quartet group for 18 years, and arranged and composed music for the group for 33 years. He taught music at the Portland (Oregon) Academy and Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska; served as musical director of the Voice of Prophecy broadcast; directed development and marketing for Hosanna House; did arranging and orchestration for Chapel Records; was musical co-editor of the 1985 Seventh-day Adventist hymnal; and co-authored the Companion to the SDA Hymnal. Thomas Helmore

1811 - 1890 Topics: Anhelo y Aspiración Arranger of "VENI EMMANUEL" in Celebremos Su Gloria A graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, England, Thomas Helmore (b. Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, 1811; d. Westminster, London, England, 1890) was ordained a priest in the Church of England, but his main contribution to the church was in music. He was precentor at St. Mark's College, Chelsea (1842-1877), and master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal for many years. He promoted unaccompanied choral services and played an important part in the revival of plainchant in the Anglican Church. Helmore was involved in various publications of hymns, chants, and carols, including A Manual of Plainsong (1850) and The Hymnal Noted (with John Mason Neale). Bert Polman

Miguel Manzano

b. 1934 Person Name: Miguel Manzano, n. 1934 Topics: Anhelo Composer of "[Como están los ojos de los esclavos]" in Flor Y Canto (2nd ed.) Miguel Manzano is a Spanish composer and singer. He was born in Aillamor de Cardozo near the border with Portugal. Miguel began his religious musical career at the age of 8 as cantor at the Cathedral of Zamora, Spain. He studied solfeg, piano, organ and harmonium with the renowned teacher, Gaspar Arabaolaza. Later on, he began studies at the Higher School of Sacred Music in Madrid, where he studied Rhythm and Gregorian Modality, as well as Harmony and Religious Polyphony. He furthered his studies of language and musical rhythm at the Catholic Institute of Paris. Miguel's internationally recognized music has been chosen to complete the repertoire of the National Liturgical Hymnal of the Espicopal Committee of Spanish Liturgy.
