Our souls with pleasing wonder view

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #35 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Our souls with pleasing wonder view The bounties of thy grace; How much bestow'd, how much reserv'd, For those that seek thy face. 2 Thy lib'ral hand with worldly bliss Oft makes their cup run o'er; And in the cov'nant of thy love They find diviner store. 3 Here mercy hides their num'rous sins; Here grace their souls renews; Here hope, and love, and joy, and peace Their heav'nly beams diffuse. 4 But oh! what treasures yet unknown Are lodg'd in worlds to come! If these th'enjoyments of the way, How happy is their home! 5 And what shall mortal worms reply? Or how such goodness own? But 'tis our joy, that, Lord, to thee Thy servants' hearts are known. 6 Since time's too short, all-gracious God, To utter half thy praise; Loud, to the honour of thy name, Eternal hymns we'll raise.

My soul, repeat his praise

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #36 (1828) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 My soul, repeat his praise, Whose mercies are so great; Whose anger is so slow to rise, So ready to abate. 2 God will not always chide; And, when his wrath is felt, His strokes are fewer than our crimes, And lighter than our guilt. 3 High as the heav'ns are raised Above the ground we tread, So far the riches of his grace Our highest thoughts exceed. 4 His grace subdues our sins; And his forgiving love, Far as the east is from the west, Doth all our guilt remove. 5 The pity of the Lord To those who fear his name, Is such as tender parents feel; He knows our feeble frame. 6 Our days are as the grass, Or like the morning flower! If one sharp blast sweep o'er the field, It withers in an hour. 7 But thy compassions, Lord, To endless years endure; And children's children ever find Thy words of promise sure.

Amid the splendours of thy state

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #38 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Amid the splendours of thy state, My God, thy love appears With the soft radiance of the moon Among a thousand stars. 2 Nature through all her ample round Thy boundless power proclaims, And, in melodious accent, speaks The goodness of thy names. 3 Thy justice, holiness, and truth, Our solemn awe excite; But the sweet charms of sovereign grace O’erwhelm us with delight. 4 Sinai, in clouds, and smoke, and fire, Thunders thy dreadful name; But Sion sings, in melting notes, The honours of the Lamb. 5 In all thy doctrines and commands, Thy counsels and designs, In ev'ry work thy hands have fram'd, Thy love supremely shines. 6 Angels and men the news proclaim, Through earth and heaven above, The joyful, the transporting news, That God the Lord is Love!

Eternal and immortal King!

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #40 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Eternal and immortal King, Thy peerless splendors none can bear; But darkness veils seraphic eyes, When God with all his glory’s there. 2 Yet faith can pierce the awful gloom, The great Invisible can see; And with its tremblings mingle joy, In fix'd regard, great God! to thee. 3 Then every tempting form of sin, Aw'd by thy presence, disappears; And all the glowing raptur'd soul The likeness, it contemplates, wears. 4 O ever conscious to my heart! Witness to its supreme desire; Behold it presses on to thee, For it hath caught the heav'nly fire. 5 This one petition would it urge: To bear thee ever in my sight! In life, in death, in worlds unknown, Its only portion and delight.

Lord, all I am is known to thee!

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #26 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Lord, all I am is known to thee! In vain my soul would try To shun thy presence, or to flee The notice of thine eye. 2 Thy all-surrounding sight surveys My rising and my rest, My public walks, my private ways, And secrets of my breast. 3 My thoughts lie open to thee, Lord, Before they’re form'd within; And ere my lips pronounce the word, Thou know'st the sense I mean. 4 O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide? Within thy circling arms I lie, Beset on ev'ry side. 5 So let thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from ev'ry ill, Secured by sov'reign love.
