Behold, the great Creator makes

Author: Thomas Pestel, 1585-1659 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #46b (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Behold, the great Creator makes himself a house of clay, a robe of virgin flesh he takes which he will wear for aye. 2 Hark, hark! the wise eternal Word like a weak infant cries; in form of servant is the Lord, and God in cradle lies. 3 This wonder struck the world amazed, it shook the starry frame; squadrons of spirits stood and gazed, then down in troops they came. 4 Glad shepherds ran to view this sight; a choir of angels sings, and eastern sages with delight adore this King of kings. 5 Join then, all hearts that are not stone, and all our voices prove, to celebrate this Holy One, the God of peace and love. Christians, awake! salute the happy morn

Author: John Byrom, 1692-1763 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #48 (2000) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Christians, awake! salute the happy morn, whereon the Saviour of the world was born; rise to adore the mystery of love, which hosts of angels chanted from above: with them the joyful tidings first begun of God incarnate and the Virgin's Son. 2 Then to the watchful shepherds it was told, who heard the angelic herald's voice: 'Behold, I bring good tidings of a Saviour's birth to you and all the nations upon earth: this day hath God fulfilled his promised word, this day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord.' 3 He spake; and straightway the celestial choir in hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire; the praises of redeeming love they sang, and heaven's whole orb with alleluias rang: God's highest glory was their anthem still, peace upon earth, and unto men good will. *4 To Bethl'hem straight the enlightened shepherds ran, to see the wonder God had wrought for man; and found, with Joseph and the blessèd Maid, her Son, the Saviour, in a manger laid: then to their flocks, still praising God, return, and their glad hearts with holy rapture burn. 5 O may we keep and ponder in our mind God's wondrous love in saving lost mankind; trace we the babe, who hath retrieved our loss, from his poor manger to his bitter cross; tread in his steps, assisted by his grace, till man's first heavenly state again takes place. 6 Then may we hope, the angelic hosts among, to sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song: he that was born upon this joyful day around us all his glory shall display; saved by his love, incessant we shall sing eternal praise to heaven's almighty King. Come, thou Redeemer of the earth

Author: St. Ambrose, c. 340-397; J. M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #49 (2000) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Come, thou Redeemer of the earth, and manifest thy virgin-birth: let every age adoring fall; such birth befits the God of all. 2 Begotten of no human will, but of the Spirit, thou art still the Word of God, in flesh arrayed, the Saviour, now to us displayed. 3 From God the Father he proceeds, to God the Father back he speeds, runs out his course to death and hell, returns on God's high throne to dwell. 4 O equal to thy Father, thou! Gird on thy fleshly mantle now, the weakness of our mortal state with deathless might invigorate. 5 Thy cradle here shall glitter bright, and darkness glow with new-born light, no more shall night extinguish day, where love's bright beams their power display. 6 O Jesu, virgin-born, to thee eternal praise and glory be, whom with the Father we adore and Holy Spirit, evermore. Amen. Topics: Christmas; Advent IV Year A; Advent IV Year C Scripture: 1 John 2:1 Languages: English Tune Title: PUER NOBIS NASCITUR

If a monarch, where thy state, where thy court on thee to wait, scepter, crown and sphere? Here no regal pomp we see, naught but need and penury: why thus cradled here? 2 'For the world a love supreme brought me to this stable; all creation to redeem I alone am able. By this lowly birth of mine, sinner, riches shall be thine, matchless gifts and free; willingly this yoke I take, and this sacrifice I make, heaping joys for thee.' 3 Christ we praise with voices bold, laud and honour raising; for these mercies manifold join the hosts in praising: Father, glory be to thee for the wondrous charity of thy Son, our Lord. From heaven high I come to you

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #51 (2000) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 From heaven high I come to you, I bring you tidings good and new; glad tidings of great joy I bring, whereof I now will say and sing. 2 To you this night is born a child of Mary, chosen Virgin mild; this little child, of lowly birth, shall be the joy of all the earth. 3 This is the Christ, our God and Lord, who in all need shall aid afford; he will himself your Saviour be from all your sins to set you free. 4 These are the tokens ye shall mark: the swaddling clothes and manger dark; there shall ye find the infant laid by whom the heavens and earth were made. 5 Now let us all with gladsome cheer go with the shepherds and draw near to see the wondrous gift of God, who hath his own dear Son bestowed. 6 Welcome to earth, thou noble guest, through whom the sinful world is blest! in my distress thou com'st to me; what thanks shall I return to thee? 'Glory to God!' all heav'n with joy is ringing

Author: John E. Bowers, b. 1923 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #52 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Lyrics: 1 'Glory to God!' all heav'n with joy is ringing; angels proclaim the gospel of Christ's birth, 'Glory to God!', and still their song is bringing good news of God incarnate here on earth. 2 Lowly in wonder shepherds kneel before him, no gift to bring save love of heart and mind: come like those shepherds, sing his praise, adore him, a babe so weak, yet Saviour of mankind. 3 Humble, yet regal, wise men kneel before him, gold, incense, myrrh, their gifts to Christ they bring: come like those wise men, sing his praise, adore him a babe so poor and modest, yet a King. 4 Though now no crib or cradle is concealing Jesus our Lord in that far-distant shrine, Christ at each eucharist is still revealing his very self in forms of bread and wine. I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #54 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' In the bleak midwinter

Author: Christina Rossetti, 1830-1894 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #55 (2000) Meter: Irregular Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay; enough for him whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air, but only his mother in her maiden bliss, worshiped the Belovèd with a kiss. 5 What can I give him, poor as I am? if I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, if I were a wise man I would do my part; yet what I can I give him, give my heart.
