Why Do You Stand So Far Away, O LORD?

Hymnal: PsH #10 (1987) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Scripture: Psalm 10 Lyrics: 1 Why do you stand so far away, O LORD? Why do you hide yourself in troubled times? In arrogance the wicked trap the poor; they catch the weak in schemes they have devised. 2 The wicked boast about their hearts' desires; the covetous renounce and spurn the LORD. In pride they see no need to seek for aid; in all their thoughts they say, "There is no God." 3 They prosper and in pride ignore your law; at all their foes they only puff in scorn. Within their hearts they think, "I am secure; throughout my life my happiness is sure." 4 Their mouths are filled with oaths and lies and threats; beneath their tongues are evil thoughts and deeds. They lie in ambush near the village street; the innocent they murder and defeat. 5 The helpless one is crushed and trampled down; another victim falls beneath their might. At heart they think, "God has forgotten this; he hides his face, so he will never see." 6 Arise, O LORD, lift up your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless and the poor. Why do the wicked proudly scoff at God and say, "He will not call me to account"? 7 O God, you note injustice and distress that you may take it all into your hands. The helpless ones commit themselves to you, for you give help to orphans and the poor. 8 O break the wicked evildoers' arm! Seek out the secret sin they try to hide. The LORD is King through all eternity; all sinful ones will perish from his land. 9 LORD, you will hear the longing of the meek; strengthen their hearts, incline your ear to them. You will defend the orphan and the poor that evil ones may terrify no more. LORD, Who Are They That May Dwell

Author: James E. Seddon Hymnal: PsH #15 (1987) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Scripture: Psalm 15 Lyrics: 1 LORD, who are they that may dwell within the courts of your house? And by what lives do they show they dwell on your holy hill? 2 They lead an incorrupt life and do the thing that is right. They speak the truth from their heart and use not their tongue for harm. 3 They do no wrong to their friends and will not slander their name. They scorn the one who is false but love those who fear the LORD. 4 They stand by what they have vowed, although it be to their hurt. They do not sin with their wealth and will not be swayed with bribes. 5 Now these are they who may dwell within the courts of the LORD. Their lives shall never be moved; they stand in their God, secure. Author: Charles Wesley Hymnal: PsH #324 (1987) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 16:8 Lyrics: 1 Forth in your name, O Lord, I go my daily labor to pursue you only, Lord, resolved to know in all I think or speak or do. 2 The task your wisdom has assigned here let me cheerfully fulfill, in all my work your presence find and prove your good and perfect will. 3 You may I set at my right hand, whose eyes my inmost secrets view, and labor on at your command and offer all my work to you. 4 Help me to bear your easy yoke, in every moment watch and pray, and still to things eternal look and hasten to that glorious day. 5 Then with delight may I employ all that your bounteous grace has given, and run my earthly course with joy, and closely walk with you to heaven.
