O Lord Our God

Author: Frances A. Winters Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 4 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 First Line: O Lord our God, whom all through life we praise Lyrics: 1 O Lord our God, whom all through life we praise, as year by year, days add to numbered days, with each we prove the wonders of your ways, while, still adoring, each new song we raise. 2 With thankful hearts your goodness we confess, our guide and help in gladness an distress. For life, light, love your holy name we bless; accept the gratitude our hearts express. 3 O God, be near in loneliness and need; from fear and doubting may our minds be freed. When losses come, your consolation speed; for strength and healing love, O Lord, we plead. 4 Our hope is founded in your saving grace. Now hope abides to share love ev'ry place; and hope to serve yet spurs our slowing pace, till, hope fulfilled, we see you face to face. Through Death To Life

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 First Line: The star is not extinguished when it sets Lyrics: 1 The star is not extinguished when it sets Upon the dull horizon; it but goes To shine in other skies, then re-appear In ours, as fresh as when it first arose. 2 The river is not lost, when, o’er the rock, It pours its flood into th’abyss below: Its scattered force re-gathering from the shock, It hastens onward, with yet fuller flow. 3 The bright sun dies not, when the shadowing orb Of the eclipsing moon obscures its ray: It still is shining on; and soon to us Will burst undimmed into the joy of day. 4 The lily dies not, when both flower and leaf Fade, and are strewed upon the chill sad ground: Gone down for shelter to its mother-earth, ’Twill rise, re-bloom, and shed its fragrance round. 5 The dewdrop dies not, when it leaves the flower, And passes upward on the beam of morn: It does but hide itself in light on high, To its loved flower at twilight to return. 6 The fine gold has not perished, when the flame Seizes upon it with consuming glow: In freshened splendor it comes forth anew, To sparkle on the monarch’s throne or brow. 7 Thus nothing dies, or only dies to live: Star, stream, sun, flower, the dew-drop, and the gold, Each goodly thing, instinct with buoyant hope, Hastes to put on its purer, finer mould. 8 Thus in the quiet joy of kindly trust, We bid each parting saint a brief farewell: Weeping, yet smiling, we commit their dust To the safe keeping of the silent cell. 9 Softly within that peaceful resting place, We lay their wearied limbs; and bid the clay Press lightly on them, till the night be past, And the far east give note of coming day. 10 The day of re-appearing! how it speeds! He who is true and faithful speaks the word. Then shall we ever be with those we love, Then shall we be for ever with the Lord. 11 The shout is heard; th’archangel’s voice goes forth; The trumpet sounds; the dead awake and sing; The living put on glory; one glad band, They hasten up to meet their coming king. 12 Short death and darkness! Endless life and light! Short dimming; endless shining in yon sphere, Where all is incorruptible and pure; The joy without the pain, the smile without the tear. The Change

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 First Line: I love yon pale blue sky; it is the floor Lyrics: 1 I love yon pale blue sky; it is the floor Of that glad home where I shall shortly be; A home from which I shall go out no more; From toil and grief and vanity set free. 2 I gaze upon yon everlasting arch, Up which the bright stars wander, as they shine; And as I mark them in their nightly march, I think how soon that journey shall be mine! 3 Yon silver drift of silent cloud, far up In the still heav’n—through you my pathway lies: Yon rugged mountain peak—how soon your top Shall I behold beneath me, as I rise! 4 Not many more of life’s slow pacing hours, Shaded with sorrow’s melancholy hue— Oh, what a glad ascending shall be ours, Oh, what a pathway up yon starry blue! 5 A journey like Elijah’s, swift and bright, Caught gently upward to an early crown, In Heaven’s own chariot of all-blazing light, With death untasted and the grave unknown. Used With Tune: ELLERS Text Sources: Hymns of Faith and Hope (London: James Lisbet, 1857)

He Gave Himself

Author: Georgiana M. Taylor Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 First Line: He "gave Himself for me"; oh, blessed word! Lyrics: 1 He "gave Himself for me"; oh, blessed word! Oh, gift that has my deepest longings stirred To yield myself to Him; henceforth to be Entirely His who gave Himself for me! 2 His life for me!—spent in this world of sin, That He to God poor outcast souls might win; His life for me!—laid down in matchless love, Now occupied for me in Heaven above. 3 His mind for me! His wisdom formed the plan Whereby release was brought to guilty man. His will for me!—not slow to carry out That plan whereby He frees from sin and doubt. 4 His heart for me! Its life-blood freely shed To save the sinner—suffering in his stead; And still His heart for me, to feel my grief, To bear my burden, and to give relief. 5 His voice for me! He speaks that I may know The One who pities—yea, who loves me so. His hands for me!—once pierced by cruel nail, Now raised in prayer, lest my weak faith should fail. 6 His feet for me!—that this world weary trod, Now coming soon to take me home to God. His eye, His ear, His riches, all for me— And all my own for all eternity! Used With Tune: ELLERS Text Sources: Lays of Lowly Service (New York: James Pott & Company, 1892)

Like Enoch, Let Me Ever Walk With Thee

Author: Anna Hoppe Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Like Enoch, let me ever walk with Thee; Let me, like Mary, kneel at Thy blest feet; Let me hold fast Thy truth like Timothy And keep the faith like Paul, all pure, complete. 2 Let me, like John, stay close to Thy dear heart; Like Andrew, at the Galilean lake; From kindred rather than from Thee depart: Let me like Peter bold confession make. 3 Like Stephen, grant me strength for foes to pray, And when for me life's eventide draws nigh, O may Thy angels carry me away To dwell forever, Lord, with Thee on high.
