Down by the Jordan

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 14.14.4.7.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: John 1:6-8 First Line: Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing Lyrics: Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing, Preaching a message the people found bold and surprising: "God will forgive! Show that you'll change how you live! Surely God's new day is rising!" There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation: "Are you God's Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?" "No!" John replied. "He who is mightier than I Judges and offers salvation." Jesus, you went to be baptized with all of the others, Taking your place among sinners, God's lost sons and daughters. Then with great love, God's Spirit came as a dove! Your work began in those waters. Here in the Church, we are baptized and filled with God's Spirit. Freed and forgiven, we're welcomed with joy! Can you hear it? This is God's sign! This is how God says, "You're mine!" Let's take the good news and share it! Topics: Baptism; Church Year; Jesus Christ Ministry Used With Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN

I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (Oí la voz del Salvador)

Author: Horatius Bonar, 1808-1889; Anonymous Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1,223 hymnals Scripture: John 1:4-9 Lyrics: 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; Lay down, O weary one, lay down Your head upon my breast." I came to Jesus as I was, So weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, And he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down and drink and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in him. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world’s light; Look unto me, your morn shall rise, And all your day be bright." I looked to Jesus, and I found In him my star, my sun; And in that light of life I’ll walk Till trav'ling days are done. Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom

Author: John Henry Newman, 1801-90 Meter: 10.4.10.4.10.10 Appears in 1,222 hymnals Scripture: John 1:1-9 Lyrics: 1 Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom; lead thou me on. The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead thou me on. Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene - one step enough for me. 2 I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou shouldst lead me on. I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead thou me on. I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears pride ruled my will: remember not past years. 3 So long thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on, o'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till the night is gone; and with the morn those angel faces smile, which I have loved long since, and lost awhile. O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts

Author: Ray Palmer Meter: 8.8.8.8.8 with refrain Appears in 553 hymnals Scripture: John 1:1-18 Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men, from fullest bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again, we turn unfilled to thee again. 2 Thy truth unchanged has ever stood, thou savest those that on thee call; to them that seek thee, thou art good, to them that find thee, all in all, to them that find thee, all in all. 3 We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still; we drink of thee, the fountainhead, and thirst our souls from thee to fill, and thirst our souls from thee to fill. 4 Our restless spirits yearn for thee, where'er our changeful lot is cast, glad that thy gracious smile we see, blest that our faith can hold thee fast, blest that our faith can hold thee fast. 5 O Jesus, ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away, shed o'er the world thy holy light, shed o'er the world thy holy light. Lift up your heads, you mighty gates

Author: Georg Weissel, 1590-1635; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.6.6 Appears in 272 hymnals Scripture: John 1:1-9 Lyrics: 1 Lift up your heads, you mighty gates, behold, the King of glory waits! The King of kings is drawing near, the Saviour of the world is here; salvation and new life he brings, therefore the earth is glad and sings: Our Maker, we sing praise, mighty in all your ways. 2 The Lord is just, a helper tried, with mercy ever at his side; his kingly crown is holiness, his scepter, pity in distress; the end of all our woes he brings, therefore the earth is glad and sings: Our Saviour, we now raise our grateful hymns of praise. 3 How blest the land, the city blest, where Christ the ruler is confessed! What happy hearts and happy homes to whom this king in triumph comes! The cloudless sun of joy he is, Who brings us pure delight and bliss. Our Comforter, we raise our grateful hymns of praise. 4 Lift up the gates; lift up your heart, make it a temple set apart from earthly use for heaven's employ, adorned with prayer and love and joy: so shall your sovereign enter in, and new and nobler life begin. To you, O God, be praise for word, and deed, and grace. 5 Redeemer, come! With me abide, my heart to you I open wide. Let me your inner presence feel, your grace and love in me reveal; your Holy Spirit guide us on until our glorious goal is won. Eternal praise and fame we offer to your name.
