Ten Thousand Times Ten Thousand

Author: Henry Alford Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #394 (1995) Meter: 7.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 Ten thousand times ten thousand in sparkling raiment bright, the armies of the ransomed saints throng up the steeps of light! 'Tis finished, all is finished, their fight with death and sin. Fling open wide the golden gates and let the victors in! 2 What rush of halleluias fills all the earth and sky! What ringing of a thousand harps bespeaks the triumph nigh! O day, for which creation and all its tribes were made! O joy, for all its former woes a thousand fold repaid! 3 O then what raptured greetings on Canaan's happy shore; what knitting severed friendships up, where partings are no more! Then eyes with joy shall sparkle that brimmed with tears of late, no orphans left without a home, nor mourners desolate. 4 Bring near your great salvation, O Lamb for sinners slain; fill up the roll of your elect, then take your pow'r and reign! Appear, Desire of nations, your exiles long for home; show in the heav'n your promised sign; then, Prince and Savior, come. Topics: Martyrs and All Saints; Christian year-All Saints; Church--Triumphant; Death of Believers; Funeral and memorial service; Heaven; Hope; Life to Come; Martyrs; Moravian festivals--July 11; Reconciliation Scripture: Isaiah 25:6-9 Languages: English Tune Title: EASTHAM

I heard a sound of voices

Author: G. Thring Hymnal: The Church Hymnal #404a (1898) Meter: 7.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 I heard a sound of voices Around the great white throne, With harpers harping on their harps To him that sat thereon: "Salvation, glory, honou!" I heard the song arise, As throu' the courts of heav'n it rolled In wondrous harmonies. 2 From every clime and kindred, And nations from afar, As serried ranks returning home In triumph from a war, I heard the saints upraising, The myriad hosts among, In praise of Him Who died and lives, Their one glad triumph-song. 3 I saw the holy city, The New Jerusalem, Come down from heaven, a bride adorned With jeweled diadem; The flood of crystal waters Flowed down the golden street; And nations brought their honors there, And laid them at her feet. 4 And there no sun was needed, Nor moon to shine by night, God's glory did enlighten all, The Lamb Himself the light; And there His servants serve Him, And, life's long battle o'er, Enthroned with Him, their Saviour, King, They reign for evermore. 5 O great and glorious vision! The Lamb upon His throne; O wondrous sight for man to see! The Saviour with His own: To drink the living waters And stand upon the shore, Where neither sorrow, sin, nor death Shall ever enter more. 6 O Lamb of God Who reignest! Thou Bright and Morning Star, Whose glory lightens that new earth Which now we see from far! O worthy Judge eternal! When Thou dost bid us come, Then open wide the gates of pearl, And call Thy servants home. Amen. The fathers built this city

Author: Rev. William George Tarrant Hymnal: The Hymnal #408 (1950) Meter: 7.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 The fathers built this city In ages long ago, And, busy in its busy streets, They hurried to and fro; The children played around them And sang the songs of yore, Till, one by one, they fell asleep, To work and play no more. 2 Yet still the city standeth, A hive of toiling men, And mother’s love makes happy home For children now as then; O God of ages, help us, Such citizens to be, That children’s children here may sing The songs of liberty! 3 Let all the people praise Thee, Give all Thy saving health, Or vain the laborer’s strong right arm And vain the merchant’s wealth; Send forth Thy light to stablish The glory of the Word, Until this city is become The city of the Lord!
