The Lord Jehovah reigns

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #41 (1835) Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Lyrics: The Lord Jehovah reigns, His throne is built on high; The garments he assumes Are light and majesty: His glories shine With beams so bright, No mortal eye Can bear the sight. The thunders of his hand Keep the wide world in awe; His wrath and justice stand To guard his holy law: And where his love Resolves to bless, His truth confirms And seals the grace. Through all his ancient works Surprising wisdom shines, Confounds the powers of hell, And breaks their cursed designs: Strong is his arm, And shall fulfil His great decrees, His sovereign will. And can this mighty King Of glory condescend? And will he write his name, "My Father and my Friend?" I love his name, I love his word; Join all my powers And praise the Lord. Can creatures to perfection find

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #42 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: [Can creatures to perfection find Th' eternal, uncreated Mind? Or can the largest stretch of thought Measure and search his nature out? 'Tis high as heav'n, 'tis deep as hell And what can mortals know or tell? His glory spreads beyond the sky, And all the shining worlds on high. But man, vain man, would fain be wise; Born like a wild young colt, he flies Through all the follies of his mind, And swells, and snuffs the empty wind.] God is a King of power unknown, Firm are the orders of his throne; If he resolve, who dares oppose, Or ask him why or what he does? He wounds the heart, and he makes whole He calms the tempest of the soul; When he shuts up in long despair, Who can remove the heavy bar? He frowns, and darkness veils the moon; The fainting sun grows dim at noon; The pillars of heav'n's starry roof Tremble and start at his reproof. He gave the vaulted heav'n its form, The crooked serpent, and the worm; He breaks the billows with his breath, And smites the sons of pride to death. These are a portion of his ways; But who shall dare describe his face? Who can endure his light, or stand To hear the thunders of his hand? Topics: Persecuted saints their prayer and faith; Persecutors complained of; Church prayer in distress; Prayer in church's distress; Vineyard of God wasted Scripture: Psalm 80 Languages: English

Not to ourselves, who are but dust

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #46 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: Not to ourselves, who are but dust, Not to ourselves is glory due, Eternal God, thou only just, Thou only gracious, wise, and true. Shine forth in all thy dreadful name; Why should a heathen's haughty tongue Insult us, and, to raise our shame, Say, "Where's the God you've served so long?" The God we serve maintains his throne Above the clouds, beyond the skies; Through all the earth his will is done; He knows our groans, he hears our cries. But the vain idols they adore Are senseless shapes of stone and wood; At best a mass of glitt'ring ore, A silver saint or golden god. [With eyes and ears they carve their head; Deaf are their ears, their eyes are blind; In vain are costly off'rings made, And vows are scattered in the wind. Their feet were never made to move, Nor hands to save when mortals pray; Mortals that pay them fear or love Seem to be blind and deaf as they.] O Isr'el! make the Lord thy hope, Thy help, thy refuge, and thy rest; The Lord shall build thy ruins up, And bless the people and the priest. The dead no more can speak thy praise, They dwell in silence and the grave; But we shall live to sing thy grace, And tell the world thy power to save. Topics: God our defence and salvation; Idolatry reproved; November the 5th; Psalm for the 5th of November Scripture: Psalm 115 Languages: English

Awake, ye saints; to praise your King

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #47 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: Awake, ye saints; to praise your King, Your sweetest passions raise, Your pious pleasure, while you sing, Increasing with the praise. Great is the Lord, and works unknown Are his divine employ; But still his saints are near his throne, His treasure and his joy. Heav'n, earth, and sea confess his hand; He bids the vapors rise; Lightning and storm at his command Sweep through the sounding skies. All power that gods or kings have claimed Is found with him alone But heathen gods should ne'er be named Where our Jehovah's known. Which of the stocks or stones they trust Can give them showers of rain? In vain they worship glitt'ring dust, And pray to gold in vain. [Their gods have tongues that cannot talk, Such as their makers gave; Their feet were ne'er designed to walk, Nor hands have power to save. Blind are their eyes, their ears are deaf, Nor hear when mortals pray; Mortals that wait for their relief Are blind and deaf as they.] O Britain, know thy living God, Serve him with faith and fear; He makes thy churches his abode, And claims thine honors there. Topics: Idolatry reproved; Works and grace; Storm and Thunder; Thunder and storm; Creation and Providence; Grace and providence; Providence and creation; Rain from heaven; Weather; Israel saved from Egypt, and brought to Canaan; Church the house and care of God Scripture: Psalm 135 Languages: English
