I Sing a Song of the Saints of God

Author: Lesbia Scott Meter: Irregular Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 11:17-38 Lyrics: 1 I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, God helping, to be one too. 2 They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and God’s love made them strong; and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake, the whole of their good lives long. And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast: and there’s not any reason, no, not the least, why I shouldn’t be one too. 3 They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still; the world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea; for the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too. Gone is their grief, and their trials are over; God wipes away every tear from their eyes. 5 Blessing and glory and wisdom and power be to the Savior again and again; might and thanksgiving and honor forever be to our God: alleluia! Amen. Topics: Heaven; The Saints Used With Tune: O QUANTA QUALIA

Faith of the Ancients

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 11:33-34 First Line: Blest is the mem'ry of the just Lyrics: 1 Blest is the mem'ry of the just, And sweet their slumbers in the dust! Though lost; long lost to mortal eye, Their well-earn'd fame shall never die. 2 In life's fair book the Patriarchs live; Prophets and saints instruction give: Though dead, they speak the truth divine, And in example brightly shine. 3 My soul, these ancient heroes view; Their faith, their love, their zeal pursue. Warm'd by each word, and glorious deed, In the same blessed path proceed. 4 O may I in their triumphs share, When the great Savior shall appear, to raise them up to high renown And give them an immortal crown! Faith Begins by Letting Go

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 11 Lyrics: 1 Faith begins by letting go, giving up what had seemed sure, taking risks and pressing on, though the way feels less secure: pilgrimage both right and odd, trusting all our life to God. 2 Faith endures by holding on, keeping memory’s roots alive so that hope may bear its fruit; promise-fed, our souls will thrive, not through merit we possess but by God’s great faithfulness. 3 Faith matures by reaching out, stretching minds, enlarging hearts, sharing struggles, living prayer, binding up the broken parts; till we find the commonplace ripe with witness to God’s grace.
