1844 - 1918 Composer of "[Look, ye saints, the sight is glorious]" in The Spirit of Praise Alfred Arthur, born of American parentage near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, oct. 8, 1844. He studied at the Music School, Boston, singing under B. F. Baker, pianoforte under George Howard, and brass instruments under Matthew Arbuckle and Henry brown; and at the Boston Conservatory harmony and composition under Julius Eichberg. After singing tenor in the Church of the Advent, Boston, two yaers, he settled in 1871 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a teacher of vocal music and leader of the Germania Orchestra. He was a member for a few months of the choir of Trinity Church in that city, and later of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, where he remained until 1878, when he formed the Bach Choir of the Woodland Avenue Presbyterian Church. This society is ranked as one of the best chorus choirs in the United States. In 1873 The Cleveland Vocal Society was formed, with Mr. Arthur as conductor. He was also director of the Cleveland School of Music. He visited Europe in 1879 and in 1887. Works: The Walter Carrier, opera, 1876; The Roundheads and Cavaliers, do, 1878; Adaline, opera, 1879-84, Songs: Memory's Dream; Tell it, Silver Throat, etc. Didactic: Progressive Vocal Studies, 1887; Album of Vocal Studies, 1887; and other vocal studies. He has also compiled the following hymn-books: Evangelical Hymnal; Spirit of Praise.
