The Sword Of The Lord And Of Gideon

Author: Clara H. Thwaites Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #11766 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D First Line: Twelve thousand stand on Gilead Lyrics: 1 Twelve thousand stand on Gilead, Yea, twice twelve thousand say! They flocked at silver trumpet’s call, All men of Israel they. But faithful Gideon cried aloud, "If craven heart there be, Return, faint-hearted, to your tents, Not yours the victory!" 2 Ten thousand stand at Gilead! No craven hearts are these; But will they speed at duty’s call, Or love they slothful ease? In weariness, in watchings oft, The soldier’s lot must stand: Can these ten thousand hardness bear, And march at God’s command? 3 See! Harod’s sparkling waters Flow flashing thro’ the plain! The Lord will try His warriors Again and yet again. Down to the margin of the stream The thirsting soldiers press, Their parchèd lips approach the stream, The leaping torrent kiss. 4 Some yield to weariness and thirst, And, kneeling on the sod, Forget awhile the trumpet’s call, Their country and their God! Some only bend in manly grace With hand dipped in the ford, And martial stand, the sword in hand, To hearken Gideon’s word. 5 "By these, by these," cried Gideon, "The Lord shall Israel save; By proven men and chosen, Three hundred warriors brave; Lest Israel’s host should vaunt itself, And dream that that power and might, Or prudence of the wise and skilled, Had conquered in the fight." 6 Three hundred stand on Gilead, Obedient men—but lo! More than a hundred thousand In Midian’s tents below! What weapons for the warfare? A trumpet and a light! The shout of a king among them Ringing thro’ Midian’s night! 7 O Lord, arise! Thy warriors choose, As erst at Harod’s well, And prove them at the waters— Thy faithful Israel! Swift as the eagle may they bear Love’s embassy abroad! Send out Thy sons of valor To war, the wars of God! 8 They will not pause, those eager souls, Where pleasure’s waves glide by, Nor, heedless of the Master’s call, In easeful languor lie. They hear the call of nations, The Master’s high command, And pure resolve and zeal inspire The missionary band. 9 O flash the torch of truth athwart The gloom of heathen night! And cheer ye with a song of faith, And trumpet sound of might! The battle is not yours, but God’s; Ring out the battle cry! The sword of God and Gideon Shall bring the victory! The Land We Love is Calling

Author: Sarah J. Wilson Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #11901 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 The land we love is calling, From plain and mountain height, Her valiant sons and daughters To lift her beacon light; From coast to coast the answer Comes ringing loud and free, "America, America," We bring our lives to thee. 2 The soul starved mountain highlands, The need of countryside, The city’s creeping darkness, Where sin and fear abide, Shall see the marching thousands That come from far and near: "America, America," Thy pleading call we hear! 3 O heralds of the morning, Stand in your radiant might, Splendid with faith triumphant, Touched by the living light, For faithful, loving service Thy country calls to thee, Till God’s redeemed America Thy shining crown shall be. I Want To Be An Angel

Author: R. F. Fuller Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #11972 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 I want to be an angel, Before I mount above, An angel in my spirit And influence of love. Beneath my every footstep I want the flowers to spring, In deeds of loving kindness, And good for everything. 2 I want to span my forehead A bow of promise bright, That every cloud of sorrow May kindle into light. Above the earth, but in it, I want my ways to wend, To keep myself unspotted, And help to others lend. 3 I want to love like angels, And be beloved again, And bring the boons of Heaven To bless my fellow men. God’s love, in all my measure, To give again I want. A heartful, heavenly Father, For my religion grant. Languages: English Tune Title: OLSZTYN

The Leaves Around Me Falling

Author: Henry F. Lyte Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12056 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 The leaves around me falling Are preaching of decay; The hollow winds are calling, "Come, pilgrim, come away!" The day, in night declining, Says, I must too decline: The year its life resigning— Its lot foreshadows mine. 2 The light my path surrounding, The loves to which I cling, The hopes within me bounding, The joys that round me wing— All, all, like stars at even, Just gleam, and shoot away; Pass on before to Heaven, And chide at my delay. 3 The friends gone there before me Are calling me from high, And joyous angels o’er me Tempt sweetly to the sky. "Why wait," they say, "and wither Mid scenes of death and sin? O rise to glory hither, And find true life begin!" 4 I hear the invitation, And fain would rise and come— A sinner, to salvation; An exile, to his home: But while I here must linger, Thus, thus, let all I see Point on, with faithful finger, To Heav’n, O Lord, and Thee. O Sacred Head, Surrounded

Author: Bernard of Clairvaux; Henry W. Baker Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12078 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 O sacred head, surrounded By crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding head, so wounded, So shamed and put to scorn! Death’s pallid hue comes o’er Thee, The glow of life decays; Yet angel hosts adore Thee, And tremble as they gaze. 2 I see Thy strength and vigor All fading in the strife, And death with cruel rigor Bereaving Thee of life; O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesu, all grace supplying, O turn Thy face on me. 3 In this Thy bitter passion, Good Shepherd, think of me With Thy most sweet compassion, Unworthy though I be: Beneath Thy cross abiding For ever would I rest, In Thy dear love confiding, And with Thy presence blest. Be Ready, All

Author: H. R. Jeffrey Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12212 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D First Line: In the awful day that’s coming Lyrics: 1 In the awful day that’s coming, When Heaven’s trump shall sound, And call the world to judgment, Oh, where shall we be found? Shall we cry for rocks and mountains To hide us in that day, From Him who comes in glory, With all His bright array? 2 The Lord is coming shortly, According to His word, Taking vengeance on the wicked, And them that know not God: Oh, who shall then be able In that awful day to stand? Thou shalt be no longer steward, Will be the stern command. 3 Shall we begin to tremble, While looking on that sight, And take our march in anguish, Down to eternal night? Oh, what an awful picture! To some it will come true; And oh, my brother, sister, Shall it be I or you? 4 Oh, souls, be up and doing, We have no time to lose; There’s life and death before us— Oh, which one will you choose? Then let us all take warning, And heed the Savior’s call, Be robed in white adorning, Then we’ll be ready, all. Languages: English Tune Title: STOCK ISLAND

The Day Of Glory Bearing

Author: James G. Deck Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12227 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 The day of glory bearing, Its brightness far and near, The day of Christ’s appearing We now no longer fear; The day when we shall meet Him Triumphant in the sky, Believing hearts shall greet Him With songs of victory. 2 He, once a spotless victim, For us on Calvary bled; Jehovah did afflict Him, And bruise Him in our stead. To Him by grace united, We joy in Him alone; And now by faith, delighted, Behold Him on the throne. 3 There He is interceding, For all who on Him rest; And grace, from Him proceeding, Tells how in Him we’re blest. Soon will He come in glory, When all His saints He’ll raise, To chant their joyful story, In songs of loudest praise. Languages: English Tune Title: WEBB

Satisfied With Jesus

Author: E. G. Masters Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12231 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D First Line: I’m satisfied with Jesus Lyrics: 1 I’m satisfied with Jesus, He’s everything to me; He saved my soul from torment, And awful misery. He gave me peace and plenty, And more than I deserved, And since my Savior found me, Him I have gladly served. 2 I’m satisfied with Jesus, And I will tell you why: He sanctified my nature And fitted me to die; He filled me with His glory And leads me every day, And keeps me now from falling, And in the holy way. 3 I’m satisfied with Jesus, I find He’s all I need; He healed me soul and body, And makes me whole indeed; He gives me food and raiment, And all I eat and wear, He beareth all my burdens, My sorrows and my care. 4 I’m satisfied with Jesus, Whatever He may do, And this same satisfaction Is waiting now for you; I’m satisfied with Jesus, Wherever I may be, And while I now obey Him, He’s satisfied with me. How Long Wilt Thou Forget Me, O Lord?

Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #12253 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D First Line: How long wilt Thou forget me Lyrics: 1 How long wilt Thou forget me, O Lord, Thou God of grace? How long shall fears beset me While darkness hides Thy face? How long shall griefs distress me And turn my day to night? How long shall foes oppress me And triumph in their might? 2 O Lord my God, behold me, And hear my earnest cries; Lest sleep of death enfold me, Enlighten Thou mine eyes; Lest now my foe insulting Should boast of his success, And enemies exulting Rejoice in my distress. 3 But I with expectation Have on Thy grace relied; My heart in Thy salvation Shall still with joy confide. And I with voice of singing Will praise the Lord above, Who, richest bounties bringing, Has dealt with me in love. Languages: English Tune Title: BRYNIAU CASSIA
