Frances L. Mace

1836 - 1899 Hymnal Number: d47 Author of "Only waiting till the shadows" in Sunday School Hymns. New and improved ed. Mace, Frances P., née Laughton, was born in Orono, Maine, Jan. 15, 1836, and married in 1855 to Benjamin H. Mace, a Lawyer of Bangor. Her hymn "Only waiting till the shadows" (Heaven Anticipated), was written in 1854, and printed in a local newspaper, the Waterville Mail (Maine), Sep. 7, 1854, in 4 stanzas of 8 lines. It has attained a wide circulation in Great Britain and America. Full text in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, 1878. See Woman in Sacred Song, 1885, p. 139, for counter-claim on behalf of Mrs. F. Buried: Los Gatos Memorial Park, San Jose, California. In 1837, Frances’ family moved to Foxcroft (now Dover-Foxcroft), Maine, where she grew up. By age 10, she was studying Latin, and had verses published by age 12. The family later moved to Bangor, Maine, where she graduated from high school, and studied German and music with private teachers. In 1855, she married lawyer Benjamin F. Mace of Bangor; in 1885, they moved to San Jose, California. They had eight children, four of whom reached adulthood. John M. Evans

Person Name: J. M. Evans Hymnal Number: d22 Author of "Kind words for all" in Sunday School Hymns. New and improved ed. Evans, John M. (Hilltown, Pennsylvania, November 30, 1825--?). Baptist. Appointed superintendent of the Sunday School at Tenth Baptist Church, Philadelphia, in 1854. Under his direction, the Sunday School became the first in that city to make music a prominent feature of its activities. In 1872, he was elected President of the Baptist Sunday School Association of Philadelphia. Author of several hymns and tunes. Included in Devotional Hymn Book (Philadelphia, 1864) is the text "Amid the joyous scenes of earth" which is interesting in that the refrain is the same as the one for the Doddridge text "Oh, happy day, that fixed my choice." --Deborah Carlton Loftis, DNAH Archives

John Atkinson

1835 - 1897 Hymnal Number: d80 Author of "We shall meet beyond the river, bye and bye" in Sunday School Hymns. New and improved ed. Atkinson, John, D.D., born at Deerfield, New Jersey, Sept. 6, 1835, and educated for the Ministry, which he now exercises in the American Methodist Episcopal Church. His very popular hymn, "We shall meet beyond the river," was written in Jan., 1867. It appeared in Bright Jewels (to music composed for it in Feb. 1867 by Hubert P. Main), in 1869, No. 43, in 4 stanzas of 8 lines. From thence both words and music passed into I. D.
