E. Swaine

1795 - 1862 Hymnal Number: 81 Author of "O how the thought that I should know" in A Collection of Hymns, intended for the use of the citizens of Zion, whose privilege it is to sing the high praises of God, while passing through the wilderness, to their glorious inheritance above. Swaine, Edward, born at London, Sep. 21, 1795. He was for about 40 years a deacon of Craven Chapel (Congregational) under the pastorate of Dr. Leifchild and others; one of the directors of the London Missionary Society, and founder and chairman of the Pastors' Insurance Aid Society. He died April 22, 1862. (Miller's Singers and Songs, 1869, p. 441.) Mr. Swaine wrote several tracts, and also printed for private circulation The Hand of God, A Fragment, with Poems, Hymns, and Versions of Psalms, 1889. His hymns, "Hail! blessed communion of love" (Holy Communion), and "Lord Jesus, let Thy watchful care" (For Emigrants), were written in 1855 for the New Congregational Hymn Book, and given therein, 1859. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1751 - 1835 Hymnal Number: 171 Author of "Jesus is our great salvation" in A Collection of Hymns, intended for the use of the citizens of Zion, whose privilege it is to sing the high praises of God, while passing through the wilderness, to their glorious inheritance above. Adams, John. (Northampton, England 1751-May 15, 1835, Northampton). Baptist. Apprenticed to an iron monger. At age eighteen, united with Baptist church in Northampton of which John Collett Ryland was pastor. Later excluded from the church because of a change of view. After retiring from business, he moved his residence several times bur subsequently returned to Northampton, where he died. His first hymns were published in the Gospel Magazine in 1776. One hymn ascribed to "S. P. R." in Service of Song but written by Adams begins: Jesus is our great salvation, Worthy of our best esteem! This hymn appearing also in Rippon's Selection of 1813 concerns salvation by election as does one other hymn: Sons we are through God's election.
