From Depths of Woe I Raise to Thee

Author: Martin Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: 1 From depths of woe I raise to thee the voice of lamentation; Lord, turn a gracious ear to me and hear my supplication: if thou iniquities dost mark, our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before thee? 2 To wash away the crimson stain, grace, grace alone availeth; our works, alas! are all in vain; in much the best life faileth: no man can glory in thy sight, all must alike confess thy might, and live alone by mercy. 3 Therefore my trust is in the Lord, and not in mine own merit; on him my soul shall rest, his Word upholds my fainting spirit: his promised mercy is my fort, my comfort, and my sweet support; I wait for it with patience. 4 What though I wait the live-long night, and till the dawn appeareth, my heart still trusteth in his might; it doubteth not nor feareth: do thus, O ye of Israel's seed, ye of the Spirit born indeed; and wait till God appeareth. 5 Though great our sins and sore our woes his grace much more aboundeth; his helping love no limit knows, our utmost need it soundeth. Our Shepherd good and true is he, who will at last his Israel free from all their sin and sorrow. Meter: 10.4.10.4.10.10 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 First Line: Out of the depths I cry to you on high Lyrics: 1 Out of the depths I cry to you on high; Lord, hear my call. Bend down your ear and listen to my sigh, forgiving all. If you should mark our sins, who then could stand? But grace and mercy dwell at your right hand. 2 I wait for God, I trust his holy word; he hears my sighs. My soul still waits and looks unto the Lord; my prayers arise. I look for him to drive away my night– yes, more than those who watch for morning light. 3 Hope in the Lord: unfailing is his love; in him confide. Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: 1 LORD, from the deeps I cry to Thee; 2 My voice, Lord, do Thou kindly hear! Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 426 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130:5-6 Lyrics: 1 Lord of all being, throned afar, thy glory flames from sun and star; centre and soul of every sphere, yet to each loving heart how near! 2 Sun of our life, thy quickening ray sheds on our path the glow of day; Star of our hope, thy softened light cheers the long watches of the night. 3 Our midnight is thy smile withdrawn, our noontide is thy gracious dawn, our rainbow arch thy mercy's sign; all, save the clouds of sin, are thine. 3 Lord of all life, below, above, whose light is truth, whose warmth is love, before thy ever-blazing throne we ask no lustre of our own. 4 Grant us thy truth to make us free, and kindling hearts that burn for thee, till all thy living altars claim one holy light, one heavenly flame.
