John Burton

1773 - 1822 Hymnal Number: 312 Author of "Tu palabra es, oh Señor" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Burton, John, born 1773, in Nottingham, where he resided until 1813, when he removed to Leicester, at which town he died in 1822. He was a Baptist, a very earnest Sunday School teacher, and one of the compilers of the Nottingham Sunday School Union Hymn Book, 1812. This book reached the 20th edition in 1861. The 1st edition contains 43 hymns which have his signature. He is known almost exclusively by one hymn, "Holy Bible, book divine" (q.v.). He was also author of The Youth's Monitor, and other similar productions for the young. Robert Hall wrote a recommendatory preface to one of his works. [Rev. W. R. Stevenson, M. John Rowe

1764 - 1832 Person Name: John Rowe, siglo XIX Hymnal Number: 327 Author (attributed to) of "Hoy venimos cual hermanos" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Rowe, John, 1764-1833. Minister at Shrewsbury and at Lewin's Mead, Bristol. His hymn on the Anticipation of Old Age, which appeared in the Bristol Collection, 1806, is also in Martineau’s Hymns for the Christian Church and Home, "When in the vale of lengthened years." Another and somewhat popular hymn by Rowe from the same Collection is “From the Table now retiring." After Holy Communion. Thomas Campbell

1800 - 1876 Hymnal Number: 206 Composer of "SAGINA" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Thomas Campbell, born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1800, died in Sheffield in 1876. In 1825 he published The Bouquet: a collection of tunes composed and adapted to Wesley's Hymns which included 23 tunes, all of which were given botanical names; the most well known is SAGINA (PEARLWORT). Edward Hodges

1796 - 1867 Hymnal Number: 5 Arranger of "HYMN TO JOY" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Born: July 20, 1796, Bristol, England. Died: September 1, 1867, Clifton, Bristol, England. Buried: Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Stanton Drew (about eight miles south of Bristol). Hodges’ musical gift showed itself at an early age; by 1819, he was playing the organ at St. James’ Church in Bristol, and at St. Nicholas’, 1821-1838. He also had an interesting mechanical bent, and spurred several technical improvements in organ design. He composed a number of services and anthem pieces, and Cambridge University awarded him a doctorate in music in 1825. Hodges eventually emigrated, accepting a post at the cathedral in Toronto, Canada, in 1838. The next year, he became music director at Trinity Parish in New York City. He became the organist at Trinity Church when it opened in 1846 (the church had its organ built to his specifications). He retired for health reasons in 1859, and returned to his native England in 1863. Honorato T. Reza

1912 - 2000 Person Name: Honorato Reza Hymnal Number: 30 Translator of "Grande es tu fidelidad" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Born: October 27, 1912, Alahuixtlan, Guerrero, Mexico. Died: 2000, Kansas City. Reza’s education began at age six in the home of a Protestant pastor, and continued in a boarding school in Teloloapan, and later in Mexico City. Reza became a Christian at age 11 after hearing a sermon by Ruth Delgado. He turned away from the faith as a teen, but was reconciled in 1930. He graduated from the Bible Institute in Mexico City in 1935, and took his first pastorate in Matías Romero, Oaxaca. Reza enrolled at the University of Pasadena, California, in 1937, received his bachelor’s degree in 1939, and returned to Mexico City in 1935 to open a new church. A few months later, he married Ernestina Tentori. Continuing post graduate studies in parallel with his pastoral duties, Reza earned a degree from the University of Mexico in 1941. H. Orton Wiley invited him to Pasadena University the following year to teach Spanish and literature. In addition to his responsibilities in Pasadena, Reza was dean and professor at a Bible college in Los Angeles for Hispanic pastors of the Church of the Nazarene in Southern California. In 1944, the General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene created a Spanish radio program, with Reza as its director. He moved with his family to Kansas City in 1946 to support that effort. For 23 years, he hosted the radio program La Hora Nazarena, which was eventually broadcast on 700 stations. In 1980, Reza became founding president of the Nazarene Seminary in Mexico City, guiding it in its early years of development. Eduard Kremser

1838 - 1914 Person Name: Edward Kremser Hymnal Number: 361 Arranger of "KREMSER" in Cáliz de Bendiciones Eduard Kremser was born 10 October 1838 in Vienna and died 26 November 1914 in Vienna. He was a choir director, conductor, composer and musicologist. He was the arranger of the music for male voices in Sechs altniederländische Volkslieder, a collection of six Dutch folk songs from Adriaan Valerius' collection Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck. From this collection comes the tune which is named after him and is sung with the English text "We Gather Together." He also edited and arranged a 3 volume set of German and Austrian folk music: Wiener Lieder und Tänze: im Auftrage der Gemeindevertretimg der Stadt Wien (published 1912-1925) as well as other volumes of folk music.
