H. Kenn Carmichael

1908 - 1996 Scripture: Psalm 8:6-8 Author of "Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples" in Glory to God H. Kenn Carmichael was born in Martins Ferry, 1908 and graduated from Muskingum College (B.A. 1938), the University of Wisconsin (M.A. in Speech, 1930), and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. in Theater, 1941). He was head of the theatre department at Purdue University (1931-1943). From 1943 to 1946, Carmichael served in the U.S. Navy, where he made training films. After his enlistment ended, Carmichael taught at City College, Los Angeles (1947-1954), and then joined Film Production International producing films for denominational stewardship campaigns. In 1962, Carmichael and his wife were commissioned by the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) of the United Presbyterian Church U.S.A. as consultants in communications to the Middle East and Africa. After ten years they returned to the United States, where Kenn became associate pastor at Central Church (1972-1979). Since 1979 the Carmichaels have lived at Westminster Gardens, Los Angeles. Carmichael was Moderator of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii in 1987. He was also honored as a distinguished alumnus by Muskingum College. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993

F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Person Name: F. E. B. Scripture: Psalm 8 Author of "Es El Amor Mi Gozo Y Mi Placer" in Melodias Evangélicas Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. M. Lynwood Smith

1924 - 2007 Person Name: Morris Lynwood Smith Scripture: Psalm 8:1 Author of "O Lord, Our Lord" in Praise for the Lord (Expanded Edition) Morris Lynwood Smith (1924-2007) was a preacher for Churches of Christ. He preached and held gospel meetings throughout Oklahoma, Alabama, and elsewhere. He helped initiate a special annual gathering of one-cup congregations on July 4 and New Year's Day that met in a different Oklahoma town each year. His interest in music led him to attend the Stamps Quartet School of Music in 1947. He sang with "The Zita Boys," a quartet composed of Johnny Elmore, Billy Smith, C. A. Smith, and himself. Smith wrote and published several songs, often writing a song for the annual meetings. In his lifetime, Smith published 16 songbooks of his and others' songs and hymns. Henry J. E. Holmes

1852 - 1938 Person Name: H. J. E. Holmes Scripture: Psalm 8 Composer of "LINTON" in The Presbyterian Book of Praise Born: March 5, 1852, Burnley, Lancashire, England. Died: October 1938, Burnley, Lancashire, England. Buried: Burnley, Lancashire, England. Son of Richard and Jane Holmes, Henry’s father and great grandfather were both solicitors; his father had offices in Colne and Burnley. Henry was educated at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. In 1875, he became an Attorney for Common Law and was admitted a Solicitor of the High Court of Chancery. He was articled to his father in November 1869, and practiced in Burnley for over 60 years, first in partnership with his brother Richard Marmaduke as Holmes and Holmes. He continued to practice on his own as Holmes and Holmes after his brother’s death in 1894, and later as Messrs. Holmes, Butterfield and Hartley. Holmes had moved from the family home on Westgate some time after the death of his sister Susannah in 1878. By 1881, he was living at 12 Palatine Square. Holmes was intimately associated with church and Sunday school work all his life. At age 17, he became a teacher and later a lay superintendent of Sandygate Sunday school, connected with Holy Trinity Church, a position he held nearly 20 years. From the 1880’s he took a deep interest in "The Home for Little Boys" at Farningham, Kent. His desire to help in this work led to the formation of the Burnley branch of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Another organization that Holmes took a great interest in was the Burnley Law Society, which he helped found in 1883; he lived to be the last survivor of the eight founders.
