How Firm a Foundation

Author: "K" Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 2,127 hymnals Topics: Comfort/Consolation First Line: How firm a foundation, you servants of God Lyrics: 1 How firm a foundation, you servants of God, is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can be said than to you has been said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? 2 "Fear not, I am with you; O be not dismayed! For I am your God and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen and help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand. 3 "When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress. 4 "When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply: the flame shall not hurt you, I only design your dross to consume, and your gold to refine. 5 "The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose I will not -- I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake, I'll never -- no, never -- no, never forsake!" The King of love my shepherd is

Author: Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 677 hymnals Topics: Comfort and Consolation Lyrics: 1 The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. 2 Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spread'st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. Scripture: Psalm 23 Used With Tune: ST COLUMBA

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Author: Joseph Medlicott Scriven Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,692 hymnals Topics: Comfort/Consolation Lyrics: 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Christ the Saviour is our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do our friends despise, forsake us? Are we tempted to despair? Jesus' strength will shield our weakness, and we'll find new courage there. Used With Tune: FRIENDSHIP
