How should the sons of Adam's race

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #23 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: How should the sons of Adam's race Be pure before their God? If he contend in righteousness, We fall beneath his rod. To vindicate my words and thoughts I'll make no more pretence; Not one of all my thousand faults Can bear a just defence. Strong is his arm, his heart is wise; What vain presumers dare Against their Maker's hand to rise, Or tempt th' unequal war? [Mountains, by his almighty wrath, From their old seats are torn; He shakes the earth from south to north, And all her pillars mourn. He bids the sun forbear to rise, Th' obedient sun forbears; His hand with sackcloth spreads the skies, And seals up all the stars. He walks upon the stormy sea, Flies on the stormy wind; There's none can trace his wondrous way, Or his dark footsteps find.] Scripture: Job 9:2-10 Languages: English

Sweet is the memory of thy grace

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #24 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: Sweet is the memory of thy grace, My God, my heav'nly King; Let age to age thy righteousness In sounds of glory sing. God reigns on high, but not confines His goodness to the skies; Through the whole earth his bounty shines, And every want supplies. With longing eyes thy creatures wait On thee for daily food; Thy lib'ral hand provides their meat, And fills their mouths with good. How kind are thy compassions, Lord! How slow thine anger moves! But soon he sends his pard'ning word To cheer the souls he loves. Bless, O my soul, the living God

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #25 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: Bless, O my soul, the living God, Call home thy thoughts that rove abroad; Let all the powers within me join In work and worship so divine. Bless, O my soul, the God of grace; His favors claim thy highest praise: Why should the wonders he hath wrought Be lost in silence and forgot? 'Tis he, my soul, that sent his Son To die for crimes which thou hast done; He owns the ransom, and forgives The hourly follies of our lives. The vices of the mind he heals, And cures the pains that nature feels Redeems the soul from hell, and saves Our wasting life from threat'ning graves. Our youth decayed, his power repairs; His mercy crowns our growing years; He satisfies our mouth with good, And fills our hopes with heav'nly food. He sees th' oppressor and th' oppressed, And often gives the suff'rers rest; But will his justice more display In the last great rewarding day. [His power he showed by Moses' hands, And gave to Isr'el his commands; But sent his truth and mercy down To all the nations by his Son. Let the whole earth his power confess, Let the whole earth adore his grace; The Gentile with the Jew shall join In work and worship so divine.] Topics: Goodness of God; God mercy and truth; Mercies and truth of God; Mercies common and special; Afflictions gentle; Angels praise the Lord; Compassion of God; God goodness and mercy; God his universal dominion; Mercies spiritual and temporal Scripture: Psalm 103:1-7 Languages: English

Up to the Lord that reigns on high

Author: Isaac Watts; Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #27 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: Up to the Lord, that reigns on high, And views the nations from afar, Let everlasting praises fly, And tell how large his bounties are. [He that can shake the worlds he made, Or with his word, or with his rod, His goodness, how amazing great! And what a condescending God!] [God, that must stoop to view the skies, And bow to see what angels do, Down to our earth he casts his eyes, And bends his footsteps downwards too.] He overrules all mortal things, And manages our mean affairs; On humble souls the King of kings Bestows his counsels and his cares. Our sorrows and our tears we pour Into the bosom of our God; He hears us in the mournful hour, And helps us bear the heavy load. In vain might lofty princes try Such condescension to perform; For worms were never raised so high Above their meanest fellow worm. O could our thankful hearts devise A tribute equal to thy grace, To the third heav'n our songs should rise, And teach the golden harps thy praise. Topics: Lord's Day Morning; Morning of a sabbath; Evidences of sincerity; Book of nature and Scripture; Gospel its glory and success; Knowledge desired; Nature and Scripture; Scripture compared with the book of nature; Sincerity; Success of the Gospel; Watchfulness; Works and grace Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

My soul, repeat his praise

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: PHDW1835 #30 (1835) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Lyrics: My soul, repeat his praise, Whose mercies are so great, Whose anger is so slow to rise, So ready to abate. God will not always chide; And when his strokes are felt, His strokes are fewer than our crimes, And lighter than our guilt. High as the heav'ns are raised Above the ground we tread, So far the riches of his grace Our highest thoughts exceed. His power subdues our sins, And his forgiving love Far as the east is from the west Doth all our guilt remove. The pity of the Lord, To those that fear his name, Is such as tender parents feel; He knows our feeble frame. He knows we are but dust, Scattered with every breath; His anger, like a rising wind, Can send us swift to death. Our days are as the grass, Or like the morning flower; If one sharp blast sweep o'er the field It withers in an hour. But thy compassions, Lord, To endless years endure; And children's children ever find Thy words of promise sure. Topics: Goodness of God; God mercy and truth; Mercies and truth of God; Mercies common and special; Afflictions gentle; Angels praise the Lord; Compassion of God; God goodness and mercy; God his universal dominion; Mercies spiritual and temporal Scripture: Psalm 103:8-18 Languages: English
