Thomas Augustine Arne

1710 - 1778 Person Name: Thomas A. Arne Hymnal Number: 89 Composer of "ARLINGTON" in Gospel Echoes Dr. Thomas Augustine Arne was born March 12, 1710, in London; became early celebrated as a composer, and established his reputation by settling Milton's "Comus" to music - light, airy, and original; he composed many songs, and nearly all his attempts were successful; died March 5, 1778, aged 68. 1800 - 1879 Hymnal Number: 88 Composer of "[Oh, they tell me of a City over yonder]" in Gospel Echoes Benjamin F. White (b. Spartanburg, SC, 1800; d. Atlanta, GA, 1879), was coeditor of The Sacred Harp (1844). He came from a family of fourteen children and was largely self-taught. Eventually White became a popular singing-school teacher and editor of the weekly Harris County newspaper. Bert Polman

Margaret Mackay

1802 - 1887 Person Name: Mrs. Margaret M. Kay Hymnal Number: 85 Author of "Asleep in Jesus" in Gospel Echoes Mackay, Margaret, was born in 1802, and the only daughter of Captain Robert Mackay, of Hedgefield, Inverness. She was married in 1820 to Major William Mackay, of the 68th Light Infantry (afterwards Lt. Colonel) a distinguished officer who died in 1845. Mrs. Mackay died at Cheltenham, Jan. 5, 1887. In addition to various prose works Mrs. Mackay published Thoughts Redeemed; or Lays of Leisure Hours, 1854, which contained 72 original hymns and poems. [Rev.
