No Tramp of Soldiers' Marching Feet

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Hymnal: WS2000 #725 (2007) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Lyrics: 1 No tramp of soldiers’ marching feet With banners and with drums, No sound of music’s martial beat-- “The King of glory comes!” To greet what pomp of kingly pride No bells in triumph ring, No city gates swing open wide: “Behold, behold your King!” 2 And yet he comes. The children cheer; With palms His path is strown. With ev’ry step the cross draws near-- The King of glory’s throne. Astride a colt He passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry, “Behold, behold Your King!” 3 What fading flow’rs His road adorn; The palms, how soon laid down! No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory’s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries, The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies, “Behold, behold Your King!” 4 Now He who bore for mortals’ sake The cross and all its pains And chose a servant’s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior’s name Till heaven’s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim, “Behold, behold your King!” Topics: Palm Sunday Languages: English Tune Title: KINGSFOLD

Long Before the World Is Waking

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Hymnal: WS2000 #735 (2007) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Lyrics: 1 Long before the world is waking, Morning mist on Galilee, From the shore, as dawn is breaking, Jesus calls across the sea; Hails the boat of weary men, Bids them cast their net again. 2 So they cast, and all their heaving Cannot haul their catch aboard; John in wonder turns, perceiving, Cries aloud, "It is the Lord!" Peter waits for nothing more, Plunges in to swim ashore. 3 Charcoal embers brightly burning, Bread and fish upon them laid: Jesus stands at day's returning In His risen life arrayed; As of old His friends to greet, "Here is breakfast; come and eat." 4 Christ is risen! Grief and sighing, Sins and sorrows, fall behind; Fear and failure, doubt, denying, Full and free forgiveness find. All the soul's dark night is past, Morning breaks in joy at last. 5 Morning breaks, and Jesus meets us, Feeds and comforts, pardons still; As His faithful friends He greets us, Partners of His work and will. All our days, on ev'ry shore, Christ is ours for evermore! Topics: Easter Languages: English Tune Title: ALL SAINTS (ZEUCH MICH)

Be Strong in the Lord

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Hymnal: WS2000 #768 (2007) Meter: 10.10.11.11 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 First Line: Be strong in the Lord in armor of light! Lyrics: 1 Be strong in the Lord in armor of light, With helmet and sword, with shield for the fight; On prayer be dependent, be belted and shod, In breastplate resplendent-- the armor of God. 2 Integrity gird you round to impart The truth of His Word as truth in your heart: His righteousness wearing as breastplate of mail, His victory sharing, be strong to prevail. 3 With eagerness shod stand firm in your place, Or go forth for God with news of His grace; No foe shall disarm you nor force you to yield, No arrow can harm you with faith as your shield. 4 Though Satan presume to test you and try, In helmet and plume your head shall be high: Beset by temptation be true to your Lord, Your helmet salvation and Scripture your sword. 5 So wield well your blade, rejoice in its pow'rs! Fight on undismayed for Jesus is ours! Then in Him victorious your armour lay down, To praise, ever glorious, His cross and His crown. Topics: Church Languages: English Tune Title: LAUDATE DOMINUM

The Day You Gave Us, Lord, Is Ended

Author: Johann Ellerton, 1826-93 Hymnal: WS2000 #796 (2007) Meter: 9.8.9.8 Person Name: Johann Ellerton, 1826-93 Lyrics: 1 The day You gave us, Lord, is ended; The darkness falls at Your request. To You our morning hymns ascended; Your praise shall sanctify our rest. 2 We thank You that Your Church, unsleeping While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And never rests by day or night. 3 As over each continent and island Each dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor do the praises die away. 4 So be it, Lord; Your throne shall never, Like earth’s proud kingdoms, pass away. Your kingdom stands and grows forever Until there dawns Your glorious day. Topics: Evening Languages: English Tune Title: ST. CLEMENT

Grant us wisdom; grant us courage For the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour. 2 Lo! the hosts of evil round us Scorn the Christ, assail His ways. From our fears that long have bound us, Free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom; grant us courage For the living of these days, For the living of these days. 3 Cure Your children’s warring madness; Bend our pride to Your control; Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, Rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom; grant us courage Lest we miss Your kingdom’s goal, Lest we miss Your kingdom’s goal. 4 Save us from weak resignation To the evils we deplore; Let the gift of Your salvation Be our glory evermore.
