Ye servants of the Lord

Author: Philip Doddridge, 1702-51 Hymnal: NEH1985 #18 (1986) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Ye servants of the Lord Each for your Master wait, Observant of his heavenly word, And watchful at his gate. 2 Let all your lamps be bright, And trim the golden flame; Gird up your loins, as in his sight, For aweful is his name. 3 Watch! 'tis your Lord's command, And while we speak, he's near; Mark the first signal of his hand, And ready all appear. 4 O happy servant he, In such a posture found! He shall his Lord with rapture see, And be with honour crowned. 5 Christ shall the banquet spread With his own royal hand, And raise that faithful servant's head Amidst the angelic band. Come, thou Redeemer of the earth

Author: St Ambrose, 340-97 Hymnal: NEH1985 #19a (1986) Lyrics: 1 Come, thou Redeemer of the earth, And manifest thy virgin-birth: Let every age adoring fall, Such birth befits the God of all. 2 Begotten of no human will, But of the Spirit, thou art still The Word of God, in flesh arrayed, The Saviour, now to man displayed. 3 *The virgin womb that burden gained With virgin honour all unstained, The banners there of virtue glow, God in his temple dwells below. 4 *Forth from that chamber goeth he, That royal home of purity, A giant in twofold substance one, Rejoicing now his course to run. 5 *From God the Father he proceeds, To God the Father back he speeds, Runs out his course to death and hell, Returns on God’s high throne to dwell. 6 O equal to thy Father, thou! Gird on thy fleshly mantle now, The weakness of our mortal state With deathless might invigorate. 7 Thy cradle here shall glitter bright, And darkness glow with new-born light, No more shall night extinguish day, Where love's bright beams their power display. 8 O Jesu, Virgin-born, to thee Eternal praise and glory be, Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Spirit, evermore. Amen. Topics: The Christian Year Christmas; Office Hymn Languages: English Tune Title: VENI REDEMPTOR

From east to west, from shore to shore

Author: Caelius Sedulius, c. 450; John Ellerton, 1826-93 Hymnal: NEH1985 #20a (1986) Lyrics: 1 From east to west, from shore to shore, Let every heart awake and sing The holy Child whom Mary bore, The Christ, the everlasting King. 2 Behold, the world's creator wears The form and fashion of a slave, Our very flesh our Maker shares, His fallen creature, man, to save. 3 For this how wondrously he wrought! A maiden, in her lowly place, Became, in ways beyond all thought, The chosen vessel of his grace. 4 She bowed her to the angel's word Declaring what the Father willed, And suddenly the promised Lord That pure and hallowed temple filled. 5 He shrank not from the oxen's stall, He lay within the manger-bed, And he whose bounty feedeth all, At Mary's breast himself was fed. 6 And while the angels in the sky Sang praise above the silent field, To shepherds poor, the Lord most high, The one great Shepherd was revealed. 7 All glory for that blessèd morn To God the Father ever be, All praise to thee, O Virgin-born, All praise, blest Spirit, unto thee. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed

Author: Anonymous Hymnal: NEH1985 #22 (1986) Meter: 11.11.11.11 Lyrics: 1 Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. 2 The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my bedside till morning is nigh. 3 Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. Topics: The Christian Year Christmas Languages: English Tune Title: CRADLE SONG

Behold the great Creator makes

Author: Thomas Pestel, 1584-1659 Hymnal: NEH1985 #23 (1986) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Behold the great Creator makes Himself a house of clay, A robe of virgin flesh he takes Which he will wear for ay. 2 Hark, hark, the wise eternal Word, Like a weak infant cries! In form of servant is the Lord, And God in cradle lies. 3 This wonder struck the world amazed, It shook the starry frame; Squadrons of spirits stood and gazed, Then down in troops they came. 4 Glad shepherds ran to view this sight; A choir of angels sings, And eastern sages with delight Adore this King of kings. 5 Join then all hearts that are not stone, And all our voices prove, To celebrate this holy One, The God of peace and love. Christians awake! salute the happy morn

Author: John Byrom, 1691-1763 Hymnal: NEH1985 #24 (1986) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Christians awake! salute the happy morn Whereon the Saviour of the world was born; Rise to adore the mystery of love Which hosts of angels chanted from above; With them the joyful tidings first begun Of God Incarnate and the Virgin’s Son. 2 Then to the watchful shepherds it was told, Who heard the angelic herald’s voice, 'Behold, I bring you tidings of a Saviour’s birth To you and all the nations on the earth: This day hath God fulfilled His promised word, This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord.' 3 He spake; and straightaway that celestial choir In hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire; The praises of redeeming love they sang, And heaven’s whole orb with alleluyas rang: God’s highest glory was their anthem still, Peace on the earth, and unto men goodwill. 4 *To Bethl'em straight the enlightened shepherds ran To see the wonder God had wrought for man, And found, with Joseph and the blessèd Maid, Her Son, the Saviour, in a manger laid: Joyful, the wondrous story they proclaim-- The first apostles of his infant fame. 5 *Like Mary let us ponder in our mind God’s wondrous love in saving lost mankind; Trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss, From his poor manger to his bitter cross; Then may we hope, angelic thrones among, To sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song.
