O what their joy and their glory must be

Author: Peter Abelard, 1079-1142; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 137 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 O what their joy and their glory must be, those endless sabbaths the blesséd ones see; crown for the valiant, to weary ones rest; God shall be all, and in all ever blest. 2 What are the Monarch, his court, and his throne? What are the peace and the joy that they own? O that the blest ones, who in it have share, all that they feel could as fully declare. 3 Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, 'Vision of peace', that brings joy evermore. Wish and fufilment can severed be ne'er, nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. 4 There, where no troubles distraction can bring, we the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing, while for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise thy blesséd people eternally raise. 5 There dawns no sabbath, no sabbath is o'er, those sabbath-keepers have one evermore; one and unending is that triumph-song which to the angels and us shall belong. 6 Now in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high, we for that country must yearn and must sigh; seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, through our long exile on Babylon's strand. 7 Low before him with our praises we fall, of whom, and in whom, and through whom are all; of whom, the Father; and in whom, the Son; through whom, the Spirit, with them ever One. [Refrain] 3 All the gates shall never close To the city foursquare; There life’s crystal river flows, And there is no night there. What Adam's Disobedience Cost

Author: Fred Pratt Green; Carol Bechtel Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 What Adam’s disobedience cost, let Holy Scripture say: ourselves estranged, an Eden lost, and then a judgment day: each day a judgment day. 2 An ark of mercy rode the flood, but we, where waters swirled, rebuilt, impatient of the good, another fallen world: an unrepentant world. 3 A little child is Adam’s heir, is Adam’s hope and Lord, sing joyful carols everywhere, that Eden is restored: in Jesus is restored. 4 Regained is Adam’s blessedness: the angels sheathe their swords; in joyful carols all confess the kingdom is the Lord’s: the glory is the Lord’s! 5 Renewed, restored we look ahead to glimpse that glorious day when in the new Jerusalem all griefs will pass away. “Amen. Hallelujah!” Topics: Biblical Names and Places Eden; Church Year Christmas; Fall and the Human Condition; God's Judgment; Jesus Christ King Used With Tune: DETROIT

Then I Saw a New Heaven and Earth

Author: Christopher M. Idle Meter: Irregular Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 Then I saw a new heaven and earth, for the first had passed away; and the holy city came down from God like a bride on her wedding day. And I know how he loves his own, for I heard his great voice tell they would be his people, and he their God, and among them he came to dwell. 2 He will wipe away every tear; even death shall die at last. There'll be no more crying or grief or pain they belong to the world that's past. And the One on the throne said, "Look! I am making all things new." He is A and Z, he is first and last, and his words are exact and true. 3 So the thirsty can drink their fill at the fountain giving life. But the gates are shut on all evil things, on deceit and decay and strife. With foundations and walls and towers like a jewel, the city shines, with its streets of gold and its gates of pearl, in a glory where each combines. 4 As they measured its length and breadth I could see no temple there, for its only temple is God the Lord and the Lamb in that city fair. And it needs neither sun nor moon in a place which knows no night, for the city's lamp is the Lamb himself, and the glory of God its light. 5 And I saw by the sacred throne flowing water, crystal clear, and the tree of life with its healing leaves and its fruit growing all the year. So the worshipers of the Lamb bear his name and see his face, and they reign and serve and forever live to the praise of his glorious grace.
