There's a Voice in the Wilderness

Author: James Lewis Milligan (1876-1961) Meter: Irregular Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:3-11 First Line: There's a voice in the wilderness crying Lyrics: 1 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! 2 O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay; the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. 3 But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong; you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong. You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast; in pastures of peace you’ll lead them, and give to the weary rest. 4 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! Topics: Advent; John, the Baptist Used With Tune: ASCENSION

When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, into pleasant pastures leads me; when I thirst, he bids me go where the quiet waters flow. 3 Who so happy as I am, even now the Shepherd's lamb? And when my short life is ended, by his angel host attended, he shall fold me to his breast, there within his arms to rest. Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 571 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:11 Lyrics: 1 The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want; he makes me down to lie in pastures green; he leadeth me the quiet waters by. 2 My soul he doth restore again; and me to walk doth make within the paths of righteousness, e'en for his own name’s sake. 3 Yea, though I walk through death’s dark vale, yet will I fear no ill; for thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still. 4 My table thou hast furnishèd in presence of my foes; my head thou dost with oil anoint, and my cup overflows. 5 Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me; and in God’s house forevermore my dwelling place shall be. I Cannot Tell

Author: William Y. Fullerton Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Appears in 33 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 First Line: I cannot tell why he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should come in flesh as prophets long foretold, or why the Shepherd longs to save the wanderers and bring them back rejoicing to the fold. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the promised Savior of the world is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the suffering Savior of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor, when he, the risen Savior of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and countless voices then will join to sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer: "At last the living Savior of the world is King!"
