Ordained deacon, Methodist Episcopal Church, Central Pennsylvania Conference, 1884. Married Ida May Wilt; two sons and four daughters. Pastor of churches in Altoona, Carlisle, Harrisburg, Milton, and other central Pennsylvania cities. Taught briefly (one year?) at Union College, Barbourville, Kentucky. Lectured for three years on the Chautauqua circuit. He re­signed from the min­is­try around 1875 to become the first su­per­in­tend­ent of the Ocean Grove New Jer­sey Camp Meet­ing As­so­ci­a­tion. 1859 - 1929 Person Name: Adaline H. Beery Hymnal Number: 169 Author of "Living for Christ" in Salvation Songs Adaline H. Beery was born on De­cem­ber 20, 1859 in Han­o­ver, Penn­syl­van­ia. Ad­a­line’s fam­i­ly moved to Io­wa when she was 10 years old. She at­tend­ed Mount Mor­ris Col­lege Acad­e­my, Mount Mor­ris, Il­li­nois and for while taught in Io­wa pub­lic schools. Ad­a­line wrote hun­dreds of po­ems, ma­ny of which ap­peared in Breth­ren pe­ri­od­i­cals and in the 1897 Po­ems of a De­cade. She died on Feb­ru­ary 24, 1929, Kane, Il­li­nois. NN, Hymnary editor. J. Hoffman Batten

1866 - 1949 Person Name: Rev. J. Hoffman Batten Hymnal Number: 36 Author of "When Jesus Came My Way" in Salvation Songs James Hoffman Batten was a Methodist minister. He served the West Grove Methodist Church in Asbury Park, the Ma­ta­wan Methodist Church, and other Methodist churches in New Jersey and Illinois. He later left the Methodist Church and joined the Congregationalist Church because he agreed with the teachings of the Congregationalists.
