O enter, Lord, Thy temple

Author: Paul Gerhardt; Miss Winkworth Hymnal: Church Book #250 (1890) Meter: 7.6 Lyrics: 1 O enter, Lord, Thy temple, Be Thou my spirit's Guest, Who at my birth didst give me A second birth more blest. Though here to dwell Thou deignest, Thou in the Godhead, Lord, For ever equal reignest, Art equally adored. 2 O enter, let me know Thee, And feel Thy power within, The power that breaks our fetters, And rescues us from sin. That I may serve Thee truly, O wash and cleanse Thou me, To render honor duly With perfect heart to Thee. 3 'Tis Thou, O Spirit, teachest The soul to pray aright; Thy songs have sweetest music, Thy prayers have wondrous might. They pierce the highest heaven Unheard they cannot fall, Till He His help hath given Who surely helpeth all. 4 The whole wide world, O Spirit, Upon Thy hands doth rest; Our wayward hearts Thou turnest As it may seem Thee best. As Thou hast done so often, Once more Thy power make known, Convert the wicked, soften To tears the heart of stone. 5 Order our path in all things According to Thy mind, And when this life is over, And all must be resigned, With calm and fearless spirit O grant us then to die, And after death inherit Eternal life on high. Sometimes a light surprises

Hymnal: The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion (New ed. thoroughly rev. and much enl.) #264 (1854) Meter: 7.6 Lyrics: 1. Sometimes a light surprises The Christian while he sings; It is the Lord who rises With healing on his wings; When comforts are declining, He grants the soul again A season of clear shining, To cheer it after rain. 2. In holy contemplation, We sweetly then pursue The theme of God's salvation, And find it ever new: Set free from present sorrow, We cheerfully can say, Let the unknown tomorrow Bring with it what it may. 3. It can bring with it nothing But he will bear us through; Who gives the lilies clothing, Will clothe his people too; Beneath the spreading heavens No creature but is fed; And he who feeds the ravens Will give his children bread. 4. Though vine nor fig tree neither Their wonted fruits should bear, Though all the fields should wither, Nor flocks nor herds be there; Yet God the same abiding, His praise shall tune my voice; For while in him confiding, I cannot but rejoice. The glorious light of Zion

Hymnal: The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion (New ed. thoroughly rev. and much enl.) #270 (1854) Meter: 7.6 Lyrics: 1. The glorious light of Zion Is spreading all around, And sinners now are hearkening Unto the gospel sound: 2. The standard of King Jesus Triumphant doth arise, And mourners crowd around it, With bitter groans and cries. 3. The suffering, bleeding Savior, Who died on Calvary, Is now proclaimed to sinners To set the guilty free; 4. And while the glorious message Was circulating round, Some souls, exposed to ruin, Redeeming love have found. 5. And of that favored number, I hope that I am one; And Christ, I trust, will finish The work he has begun; 6. He'll perfect it in righteousness, And I shall ever be A monument of mercy, To all eternity. 7. I am but a young convert, Who lately did enlist A soldier under Jesus, My Prophet, King, and Priest; 8. I have received my bounty, Likewise my martial dress, A ring of love and favor, A robe of righteousness. 9. Now down into the water Will we young converts go; There went our Lord and Master When he was here below; 10. We lay our sinful bodies Beneath the yielding wave, An emblem of the Savior, When he lay in the grave. 11. Poor sinners, think what Jesus Has done for you and me: Behold his mangled body Hung tortured on the tree! 12. His hands, his feet, his bleeding side To you he doth display;— Oh! tell me, brother sinner, How can you stay away? 13. Come, all you elder brethren Ye soldiers of the cross; Who, for the sake of Jesus, Have counted all things loss. 14. Come pray for us, young converts That we may travel on, And meet you all in glory Where our Redeemer's gone. To see the saints in glory, And the angels stand inviting The angels stand inviting, To welcome pilgrims home. Languages: English Tune Title: ZION'S LIGHT

While yet the morn is breaking

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #295 (1893) Meter: 7.6 Lyrics: 1 WHILE yet the morn is breaking, I thank my God once more, Beneath whose care awaking I find the night is o'er; I thank Him that He calls me To life and health anew; I know, whate'er befalls me, His care will still be true. 2 Guardian of Israel, hear me, Watch o'er me through the day, In all I do be near me: For others too, I pray; To Thee I would commend them, Our Church, our school, our land, Direct them and defend them, When dangers are at hand. 3 O gracious Lord, direct us, Thy doctrine pure defend, From heresies protect us, And for Thy Word contend, That we may praise Thee ever, O God, with one accord, Saying: The Lord our Saviour Be evermore adored! 4 O grant us peace and gladness, Give us our daily bread, Shield us from grief and sadness, On us Thy blessings shed; Grant that our whole behaviour In truth and righteousness May praise Thee, Lord our Saviour, Whose holy name we bless. 5 And gently grant Thy blessing, That we may do Thy will, No more Thy ways transgressing, Our proper task fulfill; With Peter's full affiance Let down our nets again; If Thou art our Reliance, Our toil will not be vain. 6 With craftiness unceasing Strives Satan to restrain What in Thy sight is pleasing, And for Thy Church is gain; Yet vain is his endeavor, For Thou, O Christ our Lord, Dost rule all things forever By Thine almighty Word. 7 Thou art the Vine,--O nourish The branches graft in Thee, And let them grow and flourish A fair and fruitful tree; Thy Spirit pour within us, And let His gifts of grace To all good actions win us, That best may show Thy praise. From Greenland's icy mountains

Author: Reginald Heber Hymnal: Church Book #297 (1890) Meter: 7.6 Lyrics: 1 From Greenland's icy mountains, From India's coral strand; Where Afric's bright fountains Roll down their golden sand; From many an ancient river, From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver Their land from error's chain. 2 What though the spicy breezes Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle; Though every prospect pleases, And only man is vile: In vain with lavish kindness The gifts of God are strown: The heathen, in his blindness, Bows down to wood and stone. 3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted With wisdom from on high, Shall we to men benighted The lamp of life deny? Salvation! O salvation! The joyful sound proclaim, Till each remotest nation Has learned Messiah's Name. 4 Waft, waft, ye winds, His story, And you, ye waters, roll, Till, like a sea of glory, It spreads from pole to pole; Till o'er our ransomed nature The Lamb for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator, In bliss returns to reign.
