Spencer Lane

1843 - 1903 Hymnal Number: 216 Composer of "PENITENCE" in Songs of Calvary Spencer Lane USA 1843-1903. Born at Tilton, NH, he served in the 8th NH Infantry during the American Civil War. After the war, he studied at the New England Conservatory and taught vocal and instrumental music at Oneida and Utica, NY. He married Isabel F. (no information on children was found). He later moved to Woonsocket, RI, where he ran a music store and served as organist and directed the choir for the St. James Episcopal Church for 13 years. He moved to Monson, MA, then to Richmond, VA, and in 1896 to Baltimore, MD. In Baltimore he worked for the music firm of Sanders & Stayman and was music director at the All Saints Protestant Episcopal Church. While at Woonsocket, his pastor gave him the hymns for an evening service, one of whose tune he didn’t care for, so he composed another tune for it, ‘Penitence’. That is his only hymn contribution. He was an author and music composer: “My beloved, I’ll think of thee”, “A dream – grand march”, others. He died at Reedville, VA. John Perry

Died: June 10, 1945, Flushing, Ohio. Buried: Flushing, Ohio. Raised a Methodist, Kirk became associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CAMA) in 1887. He organized the CAMA’s Gospel Mission in Flushing, Ohio, in 1907, and as part of the Ohio Quartet, sang at CAMA conventions and gatherings. --www.hymntime.com/tch/ ========================== Kirk, James M. (Flushing, Ohio, 1854--1945). Converted at an early age. Became associated with the C&MA in 1887, was a first subscriber to The Alliance Weekly, and wonderfully healed at the first Cleveland Alliance convention. Spent entire life on a farm but devoted much time to Christian work. A member of a famous singing group, the Ohio Quartet, which for 12 years traveled extensively in convention work. In 1906 organized the Gospel Mission of the C&MA in Flushing. An outstanding figure in the Central District as song leader and in Bible teaching and prayer. Grandfather of Geraldine Southern, well-known mezzo-soprano, music instructor at Nyack, and director of music in Alliance churches. Kirk wrote some 40 songs, many while busy with farm chores. George C. Hugg

1848 - 1907 Person Name: Geo. C. Hugg Hymnal Number: 164 Composer of "[I've been on Mount Pisgah's lofty height]" in Songs of Calvary George Crawford Hugg USA 1848-1907. Born near Haddonfield, NJ, he became choirmaster at the Berlin, NJ, Presbyterian Church at age 12. At age 14 he published his first song, “Walk in the light”, which became very popular. He married Anne E Ketchum, and they had a daughter, Evangeline. He served as choirmaster of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and also the Broad Street and Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churches there. He was also closely associated with the Harper Memorial Presbyterian Church there. He was a prolific composer with over 2000 works, publishing 18 books of revival and Sunday school music, and 90 songs for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.). He died in Philadelphia, PA. 1873 - 1935 Person Name: A. F. I. Hymnal Number: 76 Arranger of "[When sorrow and storms are besetting my track]" in Songs of Calvary Born: May 12, 1873, Montandon, Pennsylvania. Died: August 8, 1935, Abington, Connecticut. Buried: North Swansea, Rhode Island. The 1900 census shows Ingler as a "vocalist" living in Denver, Colorado. The 1920 census shows him as a Nazarene preacher in Tillamook, Oregon. After the death of his wife Amalia, he moved east and married Lura Horton, who at the time was pastor of the People’s Church of the Nazarene in Providence, Rhode Island. The two of them served joint pastorates in Fitchburg, Massachusetts; Jackman, Maine; North Attleboro, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; and, in 1931, at Emmanuel Church, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
