1809 - 1857 Person Name: A. H. Shepherd Hymnal Number: JS-12 Author of "Around the Throne" in Epworth Songs Shepherd, Anne, née Houlditch, daughter of the Rev. E. H. Houlditch, sometime Rector of Speen, Berkshire, was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, Sept. 11, 1809; married to Mr. S. Saville Shepherd in 1843; and died at Blackheath, Kent, Jan. 7, 1857. Her Hymns adapted to the Comprehension of Young Minds were published (3rd ed. 1847 5th ed. 1855), and contained 64 hymns. Of these the following have come into common use:— 1. Around the throne of God in heaven. 2. Glory to Jesus, glory. Praise. 3. Here's a message of love. Invitation. 4. I have read of the Saviour's love. The Love of Christ. 5. See where the gentle Jesus reigns. Jesus, the Children's Friend. Of these hymns the first has by far the widest acceptance, and is found in a large number of children's hymn-books. Her religious novels, Ellen Seymour, 1848; and Reality, 1852, attracted some attention. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1836 - 1920 Hymnal Number: 45 Composer of "[I'm sinking in the sea of sin]" in Epworth Songs Henry Lake Gilmour United Kingdom 1836-1920. Born at Londonderry, Ireland, he emigrated to America as a teenager, thinking he wanted to learn navigation. When he reached the U.S., he arrived in Philadelphia and decided to seek his fortune in America. He started working as a painter, then served in the American Civil War, where he was captured and spent several months in Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. He married Letitia Pauline Howard in 1858. After the war he trained as a dentist and did that for many years. In 1869 he moved to Wenonah, NJ, and helped found the Methodist church there in 1885. He served as Sunday school superintendent and, for four decades, directed the choir at the Pittman Grove Camp Meeting, also working as song leader at camp meetings in Mountain Lake Park, MD, and Ridgeview Park, PA. He was an editor, author, and composer. He edited and/or published 25 gospel song books, along with John Sweney, J Lincoln Hall, John J Hood, Howard Entwistle, Joshua Gill, E L Hyde, Milton S Rees and William J Kirkpatrick. He died in Delair, NJ, after a buggy accident. John Perry

Born just af­ter the pre­si­den­tial cam­paign of "Tip­pe­ca­noe and Ty­ler, too," Ten­ney was named af­ter Amer­i­can pre­si­dent Will­iam Hen­ry Har­ri­son. A dea­con in the Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in Line­brook, Mass­a­chu­setts, he ed­it­ed or was as­so­ci­ate ed­it­or of over 30 books, and con­trib­ut­ed to hun­dreds more.
