Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 222 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8 Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with rev'rence and with fear; though dust and ashes in your sight, we may, we must draw near. 2 O God of grace we come to you with broken, contrite hearts; give what your eye delights to view, truth in the inward parts. 3 Give deep humility; the sense of godly sorrow give; a strong desiring confidence to hear your voice and live; 4 give faith in your great sacrifice that does for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes on Christ, and Christ alone; 5 give patience as we watch and weep, though mercy long delay; give courage our faint souls to keep, and trust you though you slay; 6 give these, and then your will be done; thus strengthened with all might, we, through your Spirit and your Son, shall pray, and pray aright. Coxe Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 202 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:14-22 Lyrics: 1 We are living, we are dwelling, In a grand and awful time, In an age on ages telling; To be living is sublime. Hark! the waking up of nations, Hosts advancing to the fray; Hark! what soundeth is creation’s Groaning for the latter day. 2 Will ye play, then? will ye dally Far behind the battle line? Up! it is Jehovah’s rally; God’s own arm hath need of thine. Worlds are changing, heaven beholding; Thou hast but an hour to fight; Now, the blazoned cross unfolding On, right onward for the right. 3 Sworn to yield, to waver never; Consecrated, born again; Sworn to be Christ’s soldiers ever, O for Christ at last be men! O let all the soul within you For the truth’s sake go abroad! Strike! let every nerve and sinew Tell on ages, tell for God. Amen. Used With Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN

O happy band of pilgrims

Author: John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 7.6.7.6 Appears in 183 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:16-17 Lyrics: 1 O happy band of pilgrims, if onward ye will tread, with Jesus as your fellow, to Jesus as your Head! 2 O happy if ye labour as Jesus did for men! O happy if ye hunger as Jesus hungered then! 3 The cross that Jesus carried he carried as your due: the crown that Jesus weareth he weareth it for you. 4 The faith by which ye see him, the hope in which ye yearn, the love that through all troubles to him alone will turn, 5 the trials that beset you, the sorrows ye endure, the manifold temptations that death alone can cure. 6 What are they but his jewels of right celestial worth? What are they but the ladder set up to heaven on earth? 7 O happy band of pilgrims, look upward to the skies, where such a light affliction shall win so great a prize. Conviction of sin by the law

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 128 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:14 First Line: Lord, how secure my conscience was Lyrics: 1 Lord, how secure my conscience was, And felt no inward dread! I was alive without the law, And thought my sins were dead. 2 My hopes of heav'n were firm and bright; But since the precept came With a convincing pow'r and light, I find how vile I am. 3 My guilt appear'd but small before, Till terribly I saw How perfect, holy, just, and pure, Was thy eternal law. 4 Then felt my soul the heavy load, My sins reviv'd again; I had provok'd a dreadful God, And all my hopes were slain. 5 I'm like a helpless captive sold Under the pow'r of sin; I cannot do the good I would, Nor keep my conscience clean. 6 My God, I cry with ev'ry breath, For some kind pow'r to save, To break the yoke of sin and death, And thus redeem the slave.
