John Allen Ferguson

b. 1941 Person Name: John Ferguson, 1941- Scripture: John 12:12-15 Arranger of "PROMISED ONE" in Worship and Rejoice John Ferguson’s name is immediately associated with hymnody and the words “hymn festival.” Every year he is invited to design and lead such events, both in local congregations and at gatherings of organists, choral conductors, and church musicians. In 1995 he designed and led a hymn festival in the Washington National Cathedral for the American Choral Directors Association national convention and in 1998 did the same at the national convention of the American Guild of Organists in Denver. He has presented such events abroad as well as in Asia (July, 1996 in Seoul, Korea) and Europe (August, 1997) in the National Cathedral of Norway, Nidaros Dom, Trondheim, as a part of the celebration of the millennium of the birth of St. Olaf. Although he is a Lutheran, his festivals are ecumenical experiences drawing upon the greatest treasures of Christian song from many centuries, traditions, and styles. Ferguson is the Elliot and Klara Stockdal Johnson Professor of Organ and Church Music and Cantor to the Student Congregation at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. St. Olaf’s great choral tradition began with F. Meluis Christiansen and has influenced many generations of fine church musicians. Christiansen’s lifelong interest in hymns is evidenced by the many hymns included in his choral compositions as well as his contributions to hymnals of his day. Ferguson’s creative hymn arrangements continue this tradition with a renewed emphasis upon congregational participation. A native of Cleveland, Ferguson’s degrees are from Oberlin College, Kent State University and the Eastman School of Music. He is respected as a fine teacher and performer and his unique skill as improviser and leader of congregational song has won national acclaim. Betty Pulkingham

1928 - 2019 Person Name: Betty Pulkingham, 1928- Scripture: John 12:12-19 Arranger of "THE KING OF GLORY" in Together in Song Betty Carr Pulkingham was born in 1928 in Burlington, North Carolina. She received a B.S. in Music in 1949 from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and she did graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. She was Instructor of Music Theory at the University of Texas. In 1951, she married a seminarian Graham Pulkingham. They ministered together in various places in the U.S., England and Scotland; they were founding members of the Community of Celebration, an Anglican religious order. She travelled widely with "The Fisherfolk," an outreach music ministry connected with the Community of Celebration. Betty Pulkingham was a well known composer and arranger. She co-edited and published a number of songbooks and books on worship; and served on the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Church Music from 1988-1994. She and her husband returned to Burlington and then she later moved to Austin, Texas to live with family. She died in Austin, May 9, 2019 at the age of 90. G. K. A. Bell

1883 - 1958 Person Name: George K. A. Bell, 1883-1958 Scripture: John 12:1-19 Author of "Christ Is the King" in Catholic Book of Worship III George Kennedy Allen Bell was born in 1883. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was chaplain to the archbishop of Canterbury in 1914, was appointed as Dean of Canterbury in 1924 and became the Anglican bishop at Chichester in 1929. He was interested in ecumenism and friendship between the Anglican Church and churches in other countries and was instrumental in starting the World Council of Churches. Melchior Vulpius

1570 - 1615 Person Name: Melchior Vulpius, c. 1560-1616 Scripture: John 12:1-19 Composer of "GELOBT SEI GOTT" in Catholic Book of Worship III Born into a poor family named Fuchs, Melchior Vulpius (b. Wasungen, Henneberg, Germany, c. 1570; d. Weimar, Germany, 1615) had only limited educational opportunities and did not attend the university. He taught Latin in the school in Schleusingen, where he Latinized his surname, and from 1596 until his death served as a Lutheran cantor and teacher in Weimar. A distinguished composer, Vulpius wrote a St. Matthew Passion (1613), nearly two hundred motets in German and Latin, and over four hundred hymn tunes, many of which became popular in Lutheran churches, and some of which introduced the lively Italian balletto rhythms into the German hymn tunes. His music was published in Cantiones Sacrae (1602, 1604), Kirchengesangund Geistliche Lieder (1604, enlarged as Ein schon geistlich Gesanglmch, 1609), and posthumously in Cantionale Sacrum (1646). Kurt Kaiser

1934 - 2018 Person Name: Kurt F. Kaiser, 1934- Scripture: John 12:13 Author of "Pass It On" in Hymns for a Pilgrim People Kurt Kaiser was born December 17, 1934, in Chicago. He attended American Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. He moved to Waco, Texas in 1959 in order to join Word Music, where he later worked as vice president and director of music. He arranged and produced several albums. He composed more than 300 songs, and with Ralph Carmichael developed Christian youth musicals. He was a longtime member of the Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. He later helped start Dayspring Baptist Church in Waco. He was an acclaimed pianist who accompanied George Beverly Shea at Billy Graham crusades. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and was elected to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He died November 12, 2018, in Waco. Arturo Gonzalez

Arturo Gonzalez Rivera (BA orchestral conducting, Conservatorio Nacional de Msica; MA choral conducting/Sacred Music, Southern Methodist University) was selected in November, 2009, to be the artistic director of Jubilate! Sacred Singers. He is currently a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at the University of Colorado in Boulder and has also studied at Westminster Choir School and the University of New Mexico under several prominent choral conductors. He was a semi-finalist in the 2009 American Choral Director Association conducting competition. Rivera has been a faculty member of El Paso Community College, the University of Texas in El Paso, East Central College in Saint Louis, Mo., and the University of Chihuahua in Mexico. He has directed choirs and orchestras since age 17 in Mexico, Central America, the U.S., and Spain. He has been guest conductor of the symphony orchestra of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and the State Chamber Orchestra and Choir of the state of Queretaro, Mexico and music director of El Paso Association for the Performing Arts, Ballet/Theatre of the Border, East Central Summer Productions, Midwest Lyric Opera, and the Colorado Light Opera. Brian A. Wren

b. 1936 Person Name: Brian Wren, b. 1936 Scripture: John 12:12-13 Author of "This Is a Day of New Beginnings (Nuevos Comienzos)" in Oramos Cantando = We Pray In Song Brian Wren (b. Romford, Essex, England, 1936) is a major British figure in the revival of contemporary hymn writing. He studied French literature at New College and theology at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. Ordained in 1965, he was pastor of the Congregational Church (now United Reformed) in Hockley and Hawkwell, Essex, from 1965 to 1970. He worked for the British Council of Churches and several other organizations involved in fighting poverty and promoting peace and justice. This work resulted in his writing of Education for Justice (1977) and Patriotism and Peace (1983). With a ministry throughout the English-speaking world, Wren now resides in the United States where he is active as a freelance lecturer, preacher, and full-time hymn writer. His hymn texts are published in Faith Looking Forward (1983), Praising a Mystery (1986), Bring Many Names (1989), New Beginnings (1993), and Faith Renewed: 33 Hymns Reissued and Revised (1995), as well as in many modern hymnals.
