How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord

Author: Fred Pratt Green (1903-) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 Lyrics: 1 How clear is our vocation, Lord, when once we heed your call: to live according to your word, and daily learn, refreshed, restored, that you are Lord of all, and will not let us fall. 2 But if, forgetful, we should find your yoke is hard to bear; if worldly pressures fray the mind and love itself cannot unwind its tangled skein of care: our inward life repair. 3 We mark your saints, how they became in hindrances more sure, whose joyful virtues put to shame the casual way we wear your name, and by our faults obscure your power to cleanse and cure. 4 In what you give us, Lord, to do, together or alone, in old routines or ventures new, may we not cease to look to you, the cross you hung upon, all you endeavoured done. Christ is the world’s redeemer

Author: Duncan Macgregor, 1854-1923; St Columba, 521-97 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Lyrics: 1 Christ is the world’s redeemer, the lover of the pure, the fount of heavenly wisdom, our trust and hope secure, the armour of his soldiers, the lord of earth and sky, our health while we are living, our life when we shall die. 2 Christ has our host surrounded with clouds of martyrs bright who wave their palms in triumph and fire us for the fight. For Christ the cross ascended to save a world undone, and suffering for the sinful our full redemption won. 3 Down in the realms of darkness he lay a captive bound, but at the hour appointed he rose a victor crowned, and now, to heaven ascended, he sits upon the throne in glorious dominion, his Father's and his own. Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle

Author: Venantius Fortunatus (540?-600?); Percy Dearmer (1867-1936) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 13 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle, sing the ending of the fray; now above the cross, the trophy, sound the loud triumphant lay: tell how Christ, the world's redeemer, as a victim won the day. 2 Tell how, when at length the fullness of the appointed time was come, Christ, the word, was born of woman, left for us his heavenly home; showed us human life made perfect, shone as light amid the gloom. 3 Thus, with thirty years accomplished, went he forth from Nazareth, destined, dedicated, willing, wrought his work and met his death. Like a lamb he humbly yielded on the cross his dying breath. 4 Faithful cross, thou sign of triumph, now for us the noblest tree, none in foliage, none in blossom, none in fruit thy peer may be; symbol of the world's redemption, for the weight that hung on thee! 5 Unto God be praise and glory: to the Father and the Son, to the eternal spirit honour now and evermore be done; praise and glory in the highest, while the timeless ages run. Topics: Holy Week (Good Friday) Used With Tune: ORIEL
