Esau

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCXXXVI (1791) Topics: liturgical Confession Songs First Line: Poor Esau repented too late Lyrics: 1 Poor Esau repented too late, That once he his Birth-Right despis'd; And sold, for a Morsel of Meat, What could not too highly be priz'd: How great was his Anguish when told The Blessing he sought to obtain, Was gone with the Birth-Right he sold, And none could recall it again! 2 He stands as a Warning to all, Wherever the Gospel shall come: O hasten and yield to the Call, While yet for Repentance there's Room! Your Season will quickly be past, Then hear, and obey it to-day; Lest when you seek Mercy at last, The Saviour should frown you away. 3 What is it the World can propose? A Morsel of Meat at the best! For this are you willing to lose A share in the Joys of the Blest? Its Pleasures will speedily end, Its Favour and praise are but Breath: And what can its Profits befriend Your Soul in the Moment of Death? 4 If Jesus for these you despise, And Sin to the Saviour prefer, In vain your Entreaties and Cries, When summon'd to stand at his Bar: How will you his Presence abide? What Anguish will Torture your Heart? The Saints all enthron'd by his Side, And you be compell'd to depart! 5 Too often, Dear Saviour, have I Preferr'd some Poor Trifle to Thee; How is it thou dost not deny The Blessing and Birth-Right to me? No better than Esau I am, Tho' Pardon and Heaven be mine; To me belongs nothing but Shame, The Praise and the Glory be thine. Scripture: Genesis 24:31 Languages: English

To the Holy Ghost

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCLXIII (1791) Topics: liturgical Confession Songs First Line: Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay Lyrics: 1 Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay, Tho' I have done thee such despite; Cast not a Sinner quite away, Nor take thine everlasting Flight. 2 Tho' I have most unfaithful been, Of all, whoe'er thy Grace receiv'd; Ten Thousand Times thy Goodness seen, Ten Thousand Times thy Goodness griev'd; 3 But O! the chief of Sinners spare, In Honour of my great High Priest; Nor in thy righteous Anger swear T' exclude me from thy People's Rest. 4 If yet thou canst my Sins forgive, Ev'n now O LORD, relieve my woes; Me to thy Rest of Love receive, And bless me with a calm Repose, 5 Ev'n now my weary soul release, And raise me by thy gracious Hand; Guide me into thy perfect Peace, And bring me to the promis'd Land. Still out of the deepest Abyss

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCLXIV (1791) Topics: liturgical Confession Songs Lyrics: 1 Still out of the deepest Abyss Of Trouble I mournfully cry, And pine to recover my Peace, And see my Redeemer and die. I cannot, I cannot forbear These Passionate Longings for Home; O when shall my Spirit be there? O when will the Messenger come? 2 Thy Nature I long to put on, Thine Image on Earth to regain, And then in the Grave to lay down My Burden of Body and Pain; O JESUS in pity draw near, And lull me to sleep on thy Breast; Appear, to my Rescue, appear And gather me into thy Rest. 3 To take a poor Fugitive in The Arm of thy Mercy display, And give me to rest from all Sin, And bear me triumphant away: Away from a World of Distress, Away to the Mansions above, A Heaven of seeing thy Face, A Heaven of feeling thy Love. 'Tis a Point I long to know

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCXCVIII (1791) Topics: liturgical Confession Songs Lyrics: 1 'Tis a Point I long to know, Oft it causes anxious Thought, Do I love the Lord or no? Am I His, or am I not? 2 If I love, why am I thus? Why this dull and lifeless Frame? Hardly, sure, can they be worse, Who have never heard his Name! 3 Could my Heart so hard remain, Pray'r a Task and Burden prove, Ev'ry Trifle give me Pain, If I knew a Saviour's Love? 4 When I turn my Eyes within, All is Dark and, Vain and Wild; Fill'd with Unbelief and Sin, Can I deem myself a Child? 5 If I pray, or hear, or read, Sin is mix'd with all I do; You that Love the LORD indeed, Tell me, is it thus with you? 6 Yet I mourn, my stubborn Will, Find my Sin a Grief and Thrall, Should I grieve at what I feel, If I did not love at all? 7 Could I joy his Saints to meet, Choose the Ways I once abhorr'd, Find at Times, the promise Sweet, If I did not love the LORD? 8 LORD, decide this doubtful Case! Thou, who art the People's Sun; Since upon thy Work of Grace, If indeed it be begun. 9 Let me love thee more and more, If I love at all, I'll pray; If I have not lov'd before, Help me to begin to Day. Hezekiah's Song; or, Sickness and Recovery

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCCXXVIII (1791) Topics: liturgical Confession Songs First Line: When we are rais'd from deep Distress Lyrics: 1 When we are rais'd from deep Distress, Our God deserves a Song; We take the Pattern of our Praise From Hezekiah's Tongue. 2 The Gates of the devouring Grave Are open'd wide in vain, If he that holds the Keys of Death Commands them fast again. 3 Pains of the Flesh are wont t' Abuse Our Mind with slavish Fears: Our Days are past, and we shall lose The Remnant of our Years. 4 We chatter with a Swallow's Voice, Or like a Dove we mourn, With Bitterness instead of Joys, Afflicted and forlorn. 5 Jehovah speaks the healing Word, And no Disease withstands; Fevers and Plagues obey the Lord, And fly at his Commands. 6 If half the Strings of Life should break, He can our Frame restore; He casts our Sins behind his Back, And they are found no more. Af Dybsens Nød jeg raabe maa

Author: Luther; Landstad Hymnal: Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika #273 (1919) Topics: Confessions; Confessions; Confession Lyrics: 1 Af Dybsens Nød jeg raabe maa, O Herre du mig høre!
