Psalm 119 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 170 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Thou art my portion, O my God Lyrics: Thou art my portion, O my God; Soon as I know thy way, My heart makes haste t' obey thy word, And suffers no delay. I choose the path of heav'nly truth, And glory in my choice; Not all the riches of the earth Could make me so rejoice. The testimonies of thy grace I set before my eyes; Thence I derive my daily strength, And there my comfort lies. If once I wander from thy path, I think upon my ways, Then turn my feet to thy commands, And trust thy pard'ning grace. Now I am thine, for ever thine, O save thy servant, Lord; Thou art my shield, my hiding-place; My hope is in thy word. Thou hast inclined this heart of mine Thy statutes to fulfil; And thus, till mortal life shall end, Would I perform thy will. Psalm 119, Part 2: By what means shall a young man learn

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 17 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16 First Line: By what means shall a young man learn Lyrics: 9By what means shall a young man learn his way to purify? If he according to thy word thereto attentive be. 10Unfeignedly thee have I sought with all my soul and heart: O let me not from the right path of thy commands depart. 11Thy word I in my heart have hid, that I offend not thee. 12O Lord, thou ever blessed art, thy statutes teach thou me. 13The judgments of thy mouth each one my lips declared have: 14More joy thy testimonies’ way than riches all me gave. 15I will thy holy precepts make my meditation; And carefully I’ll have respect unto thy ways each one. 16Upon thy statutes my delight shall constantly be set: And, by thy grace, I never will thy holy word forget.

Psalm 119 Part 7

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 133 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Let all the heathen writers join Lyrics: Let all the heathen writers join To form one perfect book; Great God! if once compared with thine, How mean their writings look! Not the most perfect rules they gave Could show one sin forgiv'n, Nor lead a step beyond the grave; But thine conduct to heav'n. I've seen an end to what we call Perfection here below; How short the powers of nature fall, And can no further go! Yet men would fain be just with God By works their hands have wrought; But thy commands, exceeding broad, Extend to every thought. In vain we boast perfection here, While sin defiles our frame, And sinks our virtues down so far, They scarce deserve the name. Our faith, and love, and every grace, Fall far below thy word; But perfect truth and righteousness Dwell only with the Lord. Topics: Nature and Scripture; Scripture compared with the book of nature; Instruction from Scripture; Scripture perfection

Psalm 119 Part 16

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 95 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: My soul lies cleaving to the dust Lyrics: My soul lies cleaving to the dust; Lord, give me life divine; From vain desires and every lust Turn off these eyes of mine. I need the influence of thy grace To speed me in thy way, Lest I should loiter in my race, Or turn my feet astray. When sore afflictions press me down, I need thy quick'ning powers; Thy word that I have rested on Shall help my heaviest hours. Are not thy mercies sovereign still, And thou a faithful God? Wilt thou not grant me warmer zeal To run the heav'nly road? Does not my heart thy precepts love, And long to see thy face? And yet how slow my spirits move Without enliv'ning grace! Then shall I love thy gospel more, And ne'er forget thy word, When I have felt its quick'ning power, To draw me near the Lord. Topics: Desire of quickening grace; Quickening grace

Blest are the undefiled in heart

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 83 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 Lyrics: Blest are the undefiled in heart, Whose ways are right and clean; Who never from thy law depart, But fly from every sin. Blest are the men that keep thy word, And practise thy commands; With their whole heart they seek the Lord, And serve thee with their hands. Great is their peace who love thy law; How firm their souls abide! Nor can a bold temptation draw Their steady feet aside. Then shall my heart have inward joy, And keep my face from shame, When all thy statutes I obey, And honor all thy name. But haughty sinners God will hate, The proud shall die accursed; The sons of falsehood and deceit Are trodden to the dust. Vile as the dross the wicked are; And those that leave thy ways Shall see salvation from afar, But never taste thy grace. Topics: Saints happy, and sinners cursed
