Jesus, lover of my soul

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 3,224 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:29 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, oh, receive my soul at last! 2 Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find! Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Refrain: We shall run and not be weary, We shall walk and never faint, We’re trav’ling to our happy home, We’ll walk and never faint. 2 We’ll run and never falter by the way, For Jesus’ word is true; He’s promised, if we ever will obey, To bring us safely through. [Refrain] 3 I’ll stand upon His word and prove His pow’r, The Rock of Ages past; I know He’ll keep me trusting every hour, While life on earth shall last. [Refrain] 4 The heavy weights of sin are laid aside, My heart is free and light; There’s nothing we may fear which can betide, Our hope is clear and bright. [Refrain] 5 When life is o’er and labor here is done, Can we thus say with Paul?— “I’ve fought the fight, and there’s a starry crown, That’s waiting for us all.” [Refrain] Used With Tune: [I now am running in the Christian race] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/We_Shall_Run_and_Not_Be_Weary); Faith Publishing House, Evening Light Songs, 1949, edited 1987 (197); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Select Hymns, 1911 (412)

Father, hear the prayer we offer

Author: Love Maria Willis, 1824-1908 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 235 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:31 Lyrics: 1 Father, hear the prayer we offer: not for ease that prayer shall be, but for strength that we may ever live our lives courageously. 2 Not for ever in green pastures do we ask our way to be; but the steep and rugged pathway may we tread rejoicingly. 3 Not for ever by still waters would we idly rest and stay; but would smite the living fountains from the rocks along our way. 4 Be our strength in hours of weakness, in our wanderings be our guide; through endeavour, failure, danger, Father, be thou at our side. Isaiah 40:27-31: Why pour'st thou forth thine anxious plaint

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:27-31 First Line: Why pour'st thou forth thine anxious plaint Lyrics: Why pour’st thou forth thine anxious plaint, despairing of relief, As if the Lord o’erlook’d thy cause, and did not heed thy grief? Hast thou not known, hast thou not heard, that firm remains on high The everlasting throne of Him who formed the earth and sky? Art thou afraid his pow’r shall fail when comes thy evil day? And can an all-creating arm grow weary or decay? Supreme in wisdom as in pow’r the Rock of ages stands; Though him thou canst not see, nor trace the working of his hands. He gives the conquest to the weak, supports the fainting heart; And courage in the evil hour his heav’nly aids impart. Mere human pow’r shall fast decay, and youthful vigour cease; But they who wait upon the Lord, in strength shall still increase. They with unwearied feet shall tread the path of life divine; With growing ardent onward move, with growing brightness shine. On eagles’ wings they mount, they soar, their wings are faith and love, Till, past the cloudy regions here, they rise to heav’n above.
