James H. Burke

1858 - 1901 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 Composer of "ROSEPINE" in The Cyber Hymnal James H Burke, 1855-1901, Born in Ireland, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1873. In Chicago, he attended the Moody Church and became a member. He taught Sunday school and started singing groups at the YMCA. He engaged in evangelistic work with D. L. Moody, Daniel Whittle, and others, going to Scotland and Britain for crusade work there for a year and a half. He was also music minister at the New York Gospel Tacernacle for a year in 1891. He traveled with Scottish evangelist, John McNeill for or year or so as well. John Perry

A. L. Byers

1869 - 1952 Person Name: Andrew Linnaeus Byers Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 Composer of "BAGUIO" in The Cyber Hymnal Andrew Linnaeus Byers was born on August 26, 1869 in Albany, Illinois. Byers’ mother was song writer Nancy Byers. In 1890 he became involved with Daniel Warner & Barney Warren in evangelistic work; later joined the Gospel Trumpet publishing company as music editor for a year. He left that work because of health problems and worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934. He died on November 9, 1952 in Sacramento, California. His works include: Birth of a Reformation: The Life and Labors of D. S. Warner, 1922 NN, Hymnary.

Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 Harmonizer of "KOMT, VERWONDERT" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. A Nazarene minister, Herrell was a pastor in Arlington, Virginia, when a heart ailment forced his retirement. District Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene: Pittsburgh District (1910-1916) (Brought Illinois Holiness University into his denomination as Olivet Nazarene College); Northern California District; Idaho-Oregon District (helped build Northwest Nazarene College and Good Samaritan Hospital); 1920-1922, Ohio District (bought and organized Central Ohio Camp Ground); 1925-1933 (Kansas City District); Pastored churches in Coffeeville, Kansas; Hammond, Ind.; and Arlington, Virginia. Samuel Pearce

1766 - 1799 Person Name: Samuel Pearce, 1766-1799 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 Author of "In The Floods Of Tribulation" in The Cyber Hymnal Pearce, Samuel, son of a silversmith at Plymouth, was born in that town, July 20, 1766. Early in life he joined the Baptist Church in Plymouth, and, showing gifts for the ministry, was invited to preach. After a course of study at the Baptist College, Bristol, he became, in 1790, pastor of the Baptist congregation in Cannon Street, Birmingham. There his ministry was remarkably successful; but after a brief and bright course he died on Oct. 10, 1799. He was strongly disposed to foreign mission work, and was one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society, in 1792. His Memoirs, by A. Fuller, was published in 1800. Embodied in the Memoirs were eleven poetical pieces. In the 2nd edition, 1801, these pieces were grouped together at the end of the Memoirs. He is known to hymnology through the following hymns:— 1. Author of life, with grateful heart. Evening. This in the Methodist Free Church Sunday School Hymn Book, 1860, is the original with the omissions of st. iii.; that noted on p. 98, i. is a cento for "Morning." Both are from the Memoirs, 1800. 2. God of our lives, our morning song. Morning. From the Memoirs, 1800, into the Methodist Free Church Hymn Book, 1860, with the omission of st. ii. 3. In the floods of tribulation. In Affliction. His “Hymn in a Storm," in the Memoirs, 1800, in 4 st. of 10 1. In the 10th ed. of Rippon's Baptist Selections, 1800, it is given in another form of 8 st. of 6 1. This form has come down to modern hymnals. 4. Let ocean's waves tumultuous rise. Contentment. No in the Memoirs; but in Rippon's Selections, 1800, in 6 st. of 6 1. 5. Whene'er I look into Thy word. Sunday Morning. In the Memoirs, 1800, in 8 st. of 6 1. In the 27th ed. of Rippon's Selections., 1827, st. iv.-vii., slightly altered, were given as “Our precious Lord, on duty bent." [Rev. W. R. Amanda R. Meusch

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7.8.7 Author of "My Savior's Footsteps" in The Cyber Hymnal A. R. Meusch is Amanda R. Meusch. Born in Illinois, the 1880 U. S. census shows her in Elmhurst IL as the nine-year-old daughter of Philipp Meusch, president of Elmhurst Proseminar. (That institution was the ‘Gymnasium’-level seminary-preparatory institution of the German Evangelical Synod of North America. Out of Elmhurst Proseminar would come Elmhurst College in the 1920’s: out of the German Evangelical Synod, through mergers, would come the Evangelical and Reformed and then the United Church of Christ.) Amanda’s younger brother, Frederick A. Meusch, would also become a G. E. S. N. A. minister. Amanda was fully bilingual: In addition to the hymn texts in English currently listed in Hymnary, the publication Rosche’s Geistliche Männerchöre (Chicago, Geo. F. Rosche, 1896) contains 42 hymn texts in German credited to A. R. Meusch. In addition to translations of her own hymn texts, many of these could be translations into German of English-language gospel hymns. Sources: 1880 U. S.
