Hymnal: A Selection of Psalms with occasional hymns (Charleston hymnal) #H.VII (1792) Hymnal Title: A Selection of Psalms with occasional hymns (Charleston hymnal) Lyrics: 1 Now let our mournful songs record
The dying sorrows of our Lord;
When he complain'd in tears of blood,
As one forsaken of his God.
2 They wound his head, his hands, his feet;
The streams of blood each other meet;
By lot his garments they divide,
And mock the pangs in which he died.
3 And while they see him thus forlorn,
They shake their heads, and say in scorn,
"He rescu'd others from the grave –
"Now let him try himself to save!
4 "This is the man who did pretend
"God was his father and his friend;
"If God the Father lov'd him so,
"Why does he fail to save him now?
5 The patient Saviour thus replies,
With love and duty in his eyes,
"Since blood of beasts on altars spilt,
"Can't cleanse the souls of men from guilt,
6 "I come to bear the heavy load
"Of sins, and do thy will, O God:
"I must fulfil the Saviour's part –
"Thy law is written in my heart." Topics: Good Friday Languages: English
