Psalm 89 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.184 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 89:7-52 First Line: With rev'rence let the saints appear Lyrics: With rev'rence let the saints appear, And bow before the Lord; His high commands with rev'rence hear, And tremble at his word. How terrible thy glories be! How bright thine armies shine! Where is the power that vies with thee, Or truth compared to thine? The northern pole and southern rest On thy supporting hand; Darkness and day, from east to west, Move round at thy command. Thy words the raging winds control, And rule the boist'rous deep; Thou mak'st the sleeping billows roll, The rolling billows sleep. Heav'n, earth, and air, and sea, are thine, And the dark world of hell; How did thine arm in vengeance shine When Egypt durst rebel! Justice and judgment are thy throne, Yet wondrous is thy grace; While truth and mercy, joined in one, Invite us near thy face. Topics: Providence in air, earth, and sea; Christ the true David; God mercy and truth; Mercies and truth of God; Funeral psalm; Man his vanity as mortal; Vanity of man as mortal; Death and the resurrection; Resurrection and death; God his power and majesty; Power and majesty of God; Old age and resurrection; Glory and grace promised; Afflictions without rejection; Angels all subject to Christ; Christ covenant made with him; Christ God and man; Christ his mediatorial kingdom; Covenent made with Christ; Covenent of grace unchangeable; Faithfulness Of God; Fears in the worship of God; Frailty of man; God Unchangeable; Gospel joyful sound; Life short and feeble; Love of God unchangeable; Mortality and hope; Psalm for a funeral; Reverence in worship; Unchangeable God; Worship with reverence Languages: English

Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song

Hymnal: A New Selection of Hymns; designed for the use of conference meetings, private circles, and congregations, as a supplement to Dr. Watts' Psalms and Hymns #49(94) (1812) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Psalm 89 Lyrics: 1 Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song; The joy of my heart and the boast of my tongue: Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast. 2 Without thy free mercy I could not live here; Sin soon would reduce me to utter despair: But, thro' thy free goodness, my spirits revive, And he that first made me, still keeps me alive. 3 Whene'er I mistake, thy kind mercy begins To melt me and then I can mourn for my sins; And, led by the Spirit to Jesus's blood, My sorrows are dry'd and my strength is renew'd. 4 Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolv'd by thy sun-shine, I fall to the ground And weep to the praise of the mercy I found. 5 Thy mercy is endless, most tender and free; No sinner need doubt, since 'tis given to me; No merit will buy it, nor fears stop its course; Good works are the fruits of its freeness and force. 6 Thy mercy in Jesus exempts me from hell; Its glories I'll sing, and its wonders I'll tell; 'Twas Jesus my friend when he hung on the tree, That open'd the channel of mercy for me. 7 Great Father of mercies, thy goodness I own, And covenant love of thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit whose witness divine Seals mercy and pardon, and righteousness MINE. Psalm 89 Part 1
