Hymn 53

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147:19-20 First Line: God, who in various methods told Lyrics: God, who in various methods told His mind and will to saints of old, Sent down his Son, with truth and grace, To teach us in these latter days. Our nation reads the written word, That book of life, that sure record: The bright inheritance of heav'n Is by the sweet conveyance giv'n. God's kindest thoughts are here expressed, Able to make us wise and bless'd; The doctrines are divinely true, Fit for reproof and comfort too. Ye British isles, who read his love In long epistles from above, (He hath not sent his sacred word To every land,) praise ye the Lord.

O praise the Lord with Hymns of Joy

Appears in 11 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147 Lyrics: 1 O praise the Lord with Hymns of Joy, and celebrate his Fame! For pleasant, good, and comely 'tis to praise his holy Name. 2 His holy City God will build, tho' levell'd with the Ground: Bring back his People, tho' dispers'd thro' all the Nations round. 3,4 He kindly heals the broken Hearts, and all their Wounds does close; He tells the Number of the Stars, their sev'ral Names he knows. 5,6 Great is the Lord, and great his Pow'r, his Wisdom has no Bound; The meek he raises, and throws down the Wicked to the Ground. 7 To God, the Lord, a Hymn of Praise with grateful Voices sing; To Songs of Triumph tune the Harp, and strike each warbling String. 8 He covers Heav'n with Clouds and thence refreshing Rain bestows: Thro' him, on Mountain-tops, the Grass with wond'rous Plenty grows. 9 He, savage Beasts that loosely range, with timely Food supplies; He feeds the Ravens tender Brood, and stops their hungry Cries. 10 He values not the warlike Steed, but does his Strength disdain; The nimble Foot that swiftly runs, no Prize from him can gain. 11 But he, to him that fears his Name, his tender Love extends; To him that on his boundless Grace with stedfast Hope depends. 12,13 Let Sion and Jerusalem to God their Praise address; Who fenc'd their Gates with massy Bars, and does their Children bless. 14,15 Thro' all their Borders he gives Peace, with finest Wheat they're fed; He speaks the Word, and what he wills is done as soon as said. 16 Large Flakes of Snow, like fleecy wool, descend at this Command; And hoary Frost, like Ashes spread, is scatter'd o'er the land. 17 When join'd to these, he does his Hail in little Morsels break, Who can against his piercing Cold secure Defences make? 18 He sends his word, which melts the ice; he makes his Wind to blow, And soon the Streams, congeal'd before, in plenteous Currents flow. 19 By him his Statutes and Decrees to Jacob's Sons were shown; And still to Isr'el's chosen Seed his righteous Laws are known. 20 No other Nation this can boast, nor did he e'er afford To Heathen Lands his Oracles, And Knowledge of his Word.

Great Ruler of the earth and skies

Author: Steele Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 93 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 147:14 Lyrics: 1 Great Ruler of the earth and skies, A word of thine almighty breath Can sink the world, or bid it rise: Thy smile is life, thy frown is death. 2 When angry nations rush to arms, And rage, and noise, and tumult reign, And war resounds its dire alarms, And slaughter dyes the hostile plain-- 3 Thy sov'reign eye looks calmly down, And marks their course, and bounds their power; Thy law the angry nations own, And noise and war are heard no more. 4 Then peace returns with balmy wing;-- Sweet peace, with her what blessings fled! Glad plenty laughs, the valleys sing, Reviving commerce lifts her head. 5 To thee we pay our grateful songs; Thy kind protection still implore: Oh, may our hearts, and lives, and tongues Confess thy goodness, and adore.
