George William Warren

1828 - 1902 Person Name: Geo. Wm. Warren, Mus. Doc. Composer of "[Come, my soul, thou must be waking]" in The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 George W. Warren (b. Albany, NY, 1828; d. New York, 1902) received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin, but as a musician he was largely self-trained. An organist in a number of Episcopal churches, he played the organ for thirty years (1870-1900) at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Warren composed anthems and liturgical service music; his hymn tunes were collected in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church (1888). Bert Polman

Son of composer Edward Hodges, John emigrated to America in 1845, and attended Columbia University and the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained an Episcopal minister in 1854, he served at the Grace/Second Episcopal Church, Newark, New Jersey (1860-70), and was Rector of St. Paul’s, Baltimore, Maryland, for 35 years. Henry James Buckoll

1803 - 1871 Person Name: Buckoll Translator of "Come, my soul, thou must be waking" in Hymns of the Faith with Psalms Buckoll, Henry James, M.A., son of the Rev. James Buckoll, Rector of Siddington, near Cirencester, Gloucester; born at Siddington, Sept. 9, 1803. He was educated at Rugby and Queen's College, Oxford, graduating B.A. in 1826, and became Assistant Master at Rugby the same year. He took Holy Orders in 1827, and died at Rugby June 6, 1871. He was probably the editor of the first edition of the Rugby School Collection. In 1839 he edited a Collection of Hymns for the Rugby Parish Church, and in 1850 compiled, with Dr. Goulburn, a new ed. of the Collection for the Rugby School Chapel. That collection contains 14 of his hymns, a few of which were translated from the Latin and German. His Hymns translated from the German were published in 1842. It contained 67 translations from Bunsen's Versuch, 1833, most of which are in the original metres, and are annotated in this work under their first lines in German. He played the organ at Shrewsbury, as his brother’s deputy (1846); Bishopwearmouth (1847); St. Michael’s, Wood Street (1859); the Blind Asylum, Manchester (1859); Bowden (1861); and St. Paul’s, Manchester (1863-67). He lectured in harmony and composition at Owen’s College in Manchester (1867) and Victoria University (1879), and was Professor at the Manchester College of Music (1893). He also conducted musical societies in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and owned and edited the Quarterly Music Review (1885-88). He retired in 1904, moving to Pinner, near Harrow.
