Psalm 80

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 90 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 First Line: Great Shepherd of thine Israel Lyrics: Great Shepherd of thine Israel, Who didst between the cherubs dwell, And lead the tribes, thy chosen sheep, Safe through the desert and the deep; Thy church is in the desert now, Shine from on high and guide us through; Turn us to thee, thy love restore, We shall be saved and sigh no more. Great God, whom heav'nly hosts obey, How long shall we lament and pray, And wait in vain thy kind return? How long shall thy fierce anger burn? Instead of wine and cheerful bread Thy saints with their own tears are fed: Turn us to thee, thy love restore, We shall be saved, and sigh no more. Hast thou not planted with thy hands A lovely vine in heathen lands? Did not thy power defend it round, And heav'nly dews enrich the ground? How did the spreading branches shoot, And bless the nations with the fruit! But now, dear Lord, look down and see Thy mourning vine, that lovely tree. Why is its beauty thus defaced? Why hast thou laid her fences waste? Strangers and foes against her join, And every beast devours the vine. Return, Almighty God, return, Nor let thy bleeding vineyard mourn; Turn us to thee, thy love restore, We shall be saved, and sigh no more. Lord, when this vine in Canaan grew, Thou wast its strength and glory too; Attacked in vain by all its foes, Till the fair Branch of Promise rose: Fair Branch, ordained of old to shoot From David's stock, from Jacob's root; Himself a noble vine, and we The lesser branches of the tree. 'Tis thy own Son; and he shall stand Girt with thy strength at thy right hand; Thy first-born Son, adorned and blest With power and grace above the rest. O for his sake attend our cry, Shine on thy churches lest they die; Turn us to thee, thy love restore, We shall be saved, and sigh no more. Psalm 80: Hear, Isr'el's Shepherd! like a flock

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 13 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 First Line: Hear, Isr'el's Shepherd! like a flock Lyrics: 1Hear, Isr’el’s Shepherd! like a flock thou that dost Joseph guide; Shine forth, O thou that dost between the cherubims abide. 2In Ephraim’s, and Benjamin’s and in Manasseh’s sight, O come for our salvation; stir up thy strength and might. 3Turn us again, O Lord our God, and upon us vouchsafe To make thy countenance to shine, and so we shall be safe. 4O Lord of hosts, almighty God, how long shall kindled be Thy wrath against the prayer made by thine own folk to thee? 5Thou tears of sorrow giv’st to them instead of bread to eat; Yea, tears instead of drink thou giv’st to them in measure great. 6Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours round about; Our enemies among themselves at us do laugh and flout. 7Turn us again, O God of hosts, and upon us vouchsafe To make thy countenance to shine, and so we shall be safe. 8A vine from Egypt brought thou hast, by thine outstretched hand; And thou the heathen out didst cast, to plant it in their land. 9Before it thou a room didst make, where it might grow and stand; Thou causedst it deep root to take, and it did fill the land. 10The mountains vail’d were with its shade, as with a covering; Like goodly cedars were the boughs which out from it did spring. 11Upon the one hand to the sea her boughs she did out send; On th’ other side unto the flood her branches did extend. 12Why hast thou then thus broken down, and ta’en her hedge away? So that all passengers do pluck, and make of her a prey. 13The boar who from the forest comes doth waste it at his pleasure; The wild beast of the field also devours it out of measure. 14O God of hosts, we thee beseech, return now unto thine; Look down from heav’n in love, behold, and visit this thy vine: 15This vineyard, which thine own right hand hath planted us among; And that same branch, which for thyself thou hast made to be strong. 16Burnt up it is with flaming fire, it also is cut down: They utterly are perished, when as thy face doth frown. 17O let thy hand be still upon the Man of thy right hand, The Son of man, whom for thyself thou madest strong to stand. 18So henceforth we will not go back, nor turn from thee at all: O do thou quicken us, and we upon thy name will call. 19Turn us again, Lord God of hosts, and upon us vouchsafe To make thy countenance to shine, and so we shall be safe.

O Thou Who the Shepherd of Israel Art

Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 11 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1 O thou who the Shepherd of Israel art, give ear to our pray'r and thy favor impart; thou leader of Joseph, thou guide of his way, 'mid cherubim dwelling, thy glory display. 2 In Ephraim's, Manasseh's and Benjamin's sight, O come thou and save us; awake in thy might. O God, give us favor, restore to thy grace; and then we shall live in the light of thy face. 3 From Egypt's dark border a vine thou didst take; destroying the heathen didst room for it make. Where planted it grew at thy sov'reign command, with roots deeply set and boughs filling the land. 4 The axe hews it down; it is burned in the fire; they perish, rebuked in thy terrible ire. O lay then thy hand on the Man of thy might, The Son of Man made to stand strong in thy sight. 5 No more shall we wander, delighting in shame; revive us, O Lord, we will call on thy name. O Lord God of hosts, us restore to thy grace, and then we shall live in the light of thy face. O Isr'l's Shepherd, Joseph's guide

Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1 O Isr'els Shepherd, Joseph's Guide, Our Pray'rs to thee vouchsafe to hear; Thou that do'st on the Cherubs ride, Again in solemn State appear. 2 Behold how Benjamin expects, With Ephraim and Manasseh join'd, In our Deliv'rance, the Effects Of thy resistless Strength to find. 3 Do thou convert us, Lord, do thou The Lustre of thy Face display; And all the Ills we suffer now, Like scatter'd Clouds shall pass away. 4 O thou, whom heav'nly Hosts obey, How long shall thy fierce Anger burn? How long thy suff'ring People pray, And to their Pray'rs have no Return? 5 When hungry, we are fotc'd to drench Our scanty Food in Floods of Woe; When dry, our raging thirst we quench With Streams of Tears that largely flow. 6 For us the heathen Nations round, As for a common Prey, contest: Our Foes with spiteful Joy abound, And at our lost Condition jest. 7 Do thou convert us, Lord, do thou The Lustre of thy Face display, And all the Ills we suffer now, Like scatter'd Clouds shall pass away. Part II 8 Thou brought'st a Vine from Egypt's Land; And casting out the Heathen Race, Didst plant it with thine own right Hand, and firmly fix'd it in their Place. 9 Before it thou prepar'dst the Way, and mad'st it take a lasting Root, Which, bless'd with thy indulgent Ray, O'er all the Land did widely shoot. 10,11 The Hills were cover'd with its Shade, its goodly Boughs did Cedars seem: Its Branches to the Sea were spread, And reach'd to proud Euphrates Stream. 12 Why then hast thou its Hedges o'erthrown, Which thou hadst made so firm and strong? Whilst all its Grapes, defenceless grown, Are pluck'd by those that pass along. 13 See how the bristling forest Boar With dreadful Fury lays it waste: Hark how the savage Monsters roar, And to their helpless Prey make haste. Part III 14 To thee, O God of Hosts, we pray; Thy wonted Goodness, Lord, renew: From Heav'n thy Throne this Vine survey, And her sad State with Pity view. 15 Behold the Vineyard, made by thee, Which thy right Hand did guard so long; And keep that Branch from Danger free, Which for thyself thou mad'st so strong. 16 To wasting Flames 'tis made a Prey, And all its spreading Boughs cut down; At thy Rebuke they soon decay, And perish at thy dreadful Frown. 17 Crown thou the King with good Success, By thy right Hand secur'd from Wrong: The Son of Man in Mercy bless, Whom for thy self thou mad'st so strong. 18 So shall we still continue free From whatsoe'er deserves thy Blame; And if once more reviv'd by thee, Will always praise thy holy name. 19 Do thou convert us, Lord, do thou The Lustre of thy Face display, And all the Ills we suffer now, Like scatter'd Clouds shall pass away.

To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, Eduth, A Psalm of Asaph

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 First Line: Thou that leadest Joseph Lyrics: 1 Thou that lead'st Joseph as a flock, O Israel's shepherd hear, Who dwell'st between the cherubims, O shine thou forth most clear. 2 Ephraim before, and Benjamin, Manasseh's tribe also. O stir thou up thy strength and come, For us salvation show. 3 O God return thou us again, And cause thy countenance To shine forth upon us, that we May have deliverance. 4 Lord God of hosts, how long wilt smoke Against thy people's pray'rs? 5 Thou makest them to feed upon The bread of mournful tears. And giv'st them many tears to drink. 6 Our neighbours strife likewise Thou mak'st us, and among themselves Do laugh our enemies 7 O God of hosts turn us again, And cause thy countenance To shine forth upon us, so we Shall have deliverance. [2] 8 From Egypt thou hast brought a vine, Forth also thou didst cast The heathen people, in their room The same thou planted hast. 9 Yea, thou before it didst prepare A room where it may stand, Thou didst it cause deep root to take, And it did fill the land. 10 Her shade spread hills, her boughs also, Like goodly cedars stood. 11 She sent her boughs into the sea, Her branches to the flood. 12 O why then hast thou broken down Her hedges utterly, So that all those do pluck at her Who in the way pass by? 13 The boar out of the wilderness Doth wasting it annoy. And wild beasts of the field the same Devouringly destroy. 14 We do beseech thee to return, O God of hosts incline To look from heaven, and behold, And visit thou this vine, 15 The vineyard which thou hast also With thy right hand set fast; That branch likewise which for thy self Confirm'd thou strongly hast. 16 It is consumed with the fire, And utterly cut down; They perish do, and that because Thy countenance doth frown. 17 Upon the man of thy right hand Thine hand let present be, Upon the son of man whom thou Hast made so strong for thee. 18 So from henceforth we never will From thee go back at all: O do thou quicken us and we Upon thy name will call. 19 Lord God of hosts turn us again, And cause thy countenance To shine forth upon us, so we Shall have deliverance.

Qui regis Israel

Author: J. H. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 First Line: Thou herd that Israel dost keep Lyrics: 1 Thou herd that Israel dost keep, give eare and take good heed: Which leadest Joseph like a sheep, and dost him watch and feed. 2 Thou Lord, say, whose seat is set on Cherubins most bright: Shew forth thy selfe, and do not let, send down thy beams of light. 3 Before Ephraim and Benjamin, Manasses eke likewise: To shew thy power do thou begin, come help us Lord arise. 4 Direct our hearts unto thy grace, convert us, Lord, to thee: Shew us the brightnesse of thy face, and then full safe are we. 5 Lord God of hosts of Israel, how long wilt thou I say, Against thy fo1k in anger swell, and wilt not heare them pray? 6 Thou dost them feed with sorrows deep their bread with teares they eate: And drink the teares that they do weep, in measure full and great. 7 Thou hast us made a very strife, to those that dwell about: And that our foes do love a life, they laugh and jest it out. 8 O take us (Lord) unto thy grace, convert our hearts to thee: Shew forth to us thy joyfull face, and we full safe shall be. 9 From Egypt, where it grew not well, thou brought'st a vine full deare: The heathen folk thou didst expell, and thou didst plant it there. 10 Thou didst prepare for it a place, and set its roots full fast, That it did grow and spring apace, and fill'd the land at last. The second Part: 11 The hills were covered round about, with shade that from it came: And eke the cedars strong and stout, with branches of the same. 12 Why then didst thou her wals destroy her hedge pluckt up thou hast: That all the folk that passe thereby, the vine do spoile and waste. 13 The Boare out of the wood so wild, doth dig and root it out: The furious beasts out of the field devoure it all about. 14 O Lord of hoasts returne againe, from heaven look betime: Behold and with thy help sustaine this poore vineyard of thine. 15 Thy plant, I say, thine Israel, whom thy right hand hath set: The same which thou didst love so well, O Lord, do not forget. 16 They lop and cut it down apace, they burn it eke with fire: And through the frowning of thy face we perish in thine ire. 17 Let thy right hand be with him now, whom thou hast kept so long: And with the sonne of man whom thou to thee hast made so strong. 18 And so when thou hast set us free, and saved us from shame: Then will we never fall from thee, but call upon thy Name. 19 O Lord of hosts, through thy good grace, convert us unto thee: Behold us with a pleasant face, and then full safe are we.

Can creatures to perfection find

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 64 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: [Can creatures to perfection find Th' eternal, uncreated Mind? Or can the largest stretch of thought Measure and search his nature out? 'Tis high as heav'n, 'tis deep as hell And what can mortals know or tell? His glory spreads beyond the sky, And all the shining worlds on high. But man, vain man, would fain be wise; Born like a wild young colt, he flies Through all the follies of his mind, And swells, and snuffs the empty wind.] God is a King of power unknown, Firm are the orders of his throne; If he resolve, who dares oppose, Or ask him why or what he does? He wounds the heart, and he makes whole He calms the tempest of the soul; When he shuts up in long despair, Who can remove the heavy bar? He frowns, and darkness veils the moon; The fainting sun grows dim at noon; The pillars of heav'n's starry roof Tremble and start at his reproof. He gave the vaulted heav'n its form, The crooked serpent, and the worm; He breaks the billows with his breath, And smites the sons of pride to death. These are a portion of his ways; But who shall dare describe his face? Who can endure his light, or stand To hear the thunders of his hand? Enthroned Amid the Seraphim

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1 Enthroned amid the seraphim, Where countless roll the wheels of time, Celestial light, almighty power! Burst forth in this afflictive hour! Effulgent, shine upon our race! Thy ancient mercies, Lord, retrace! 2 From superstition’s dark domain, From persecution’s cruel reign, When erst a tender vine was brought, With joys exuberantly fraught; In regions wrapped in destiny, It rose and bloomed, a lovely tree! 3 Its shade the mountains overspread; Its root, by bubbling fountains fed, Nor drought, nor desert, could arrest; Its branches filled the farthest west: Beside a thousand flowery banks, Its clusters swelled in glowing ranks. 4 Now torn and prostrate its defense, Despoiled of its magnificence, The savage hunter treads it down; It fades beneath a tyrant’s frown; The sword destroys, the fire devours, The Deity in darkness lours! 5 Ah! why deserted of our God? His vineyard, why a field of blood? Return, O God of hosts, return! Thy ravaged, slaughtered church discern! Behold, and victory impart! Thine, ever Thine, shall be our heart! Thou, who led'st Joseph, like a Flock

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1. Thou, who led'st Joseph, like a Flock, O Isr'el's Shepherd hear; Who dwell'st between the Cherubims Shine forth in Glory there. 2. Before Manasseh, Benjamin, With Ephraim, thy Rearward; Stir up thy Strength, and speedy come, Our Saviour, and our Guard. 5. Turn us again, O God, and cause Thy Face, so us'd to save, To shine forth upon us, then we Deliverance shall have. 4. How long, Jehovah, God of Hosts, Wilt thou, in Anger, smoke Against thy People's mournful Pray'r, And they in vain invoke. 5. Thou do'st abundant flowing Tears, For Meat, and Drink, impose. 6. A Strife we're to our Neighbours made; A Laughter to our Foes. 7. Turn us, O God of Hosts, and cause Thy Face, so us'd to save. To shine forth upon us, then we Deliverance shall have. Second Part 8. From Egypt thou did'st bring a Vine, Under Oppression bred; The Heathen, noxious Weeds, cast out, And plant it in their Stead. 9. Before it thou prepared'st Room, Where it was meant to stand; There thou did'st make it take deep Root, It grew, and fill'd the Land. 10. It's Shade did Mountains over-cast, And Boughs God's Cedars hide. 11. Her Arms stretch'd to the Western Sea, Her Branch Euphrates Side. 12. Oh! why then hast thou broken down Her Hedge, and laid her bare? That all the Passengers that Way, Do her in Pieces tear. 13. The Boar, out of the Wood, doth root. And sadly lay it waste; The wild Beasts of the Field do make Her Clusters their Repast. Third Part 14. Return, O God of Hosts, we pray, And let thine Heart incline, To look from Heav'n, and behold, And visit soon this Vine. 15. The Vineyard, which thine own Right-hand Did plant, and guard so long; The Branch, which for thy self alone, Thou mad'st so very strong. 16. Behold, thy Vine is burnt with Fire, It's Branches are cut down; They perish do at thy Rebuke, Because thy Face doth frown. 17. Upon the Man of thy Right-hand, Let thy Hand be display'd; Upon the Son of Man, whom thou Strong, for thy self, hast made. 18. So we will not from Thee revolt. Nor more incur thy Blame; Oh, do thou us revive, and we Will call upon thy Name. 19. Lord, God of Hosts, turn us, and cause Thy Face, so us'd to save, To shine forth upon us, then we Deliverance shall have.

O thou (between the cherubims thy throne)

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1 O thou (between the cherubims thy throne) Whom Jacob's faithful race their shepherd own, Who feed'st thy Israel with a shepherd's care, Benign O lift; attend our humble pray'r. 2 Thou to thy chosen tribes thy glory shew; Give them, the influence of thy pow'r to know; Their many woes thy instant help demand; O aid them, save them, by thy mighty hand. 3 Our heavy griefs to dissipate is thine; The clouds disperse, when beams thy light divine. 4 Dread God of battles, will thy anger last? Prefer a fruitless pray'r thy tribes distrest? 5 Their board with ever-streaming tears bedew'd, Tears are their only drink, their only food. 6 We of our villain-foes are made the spoil, And, tho' they quarrel for their spoils the while, Yet still with cruel, with inhuman pride, Our sore distresses, scornful, they deride. 7 But all our griefs to heal, O Lord, is thine; The clouds disperse, when beams thy light divine. 8 A vine thou brought'st from Pharaoh's hostile land; This vine thou planted'st with thy mighty hand; 9 To make it room, the nations drov'st away; Deep root she took; and soon did she display 10 Her tendrils far, the mountains soon she shades, And like the tow'ring, lofty cedar spreads, 11 Her fruitful boughs she stretches to the sea, To where Euphrates rolls his rapid way. 12 Ah! why does she her broken fences mourn? Why left unto her foes a prey, a scorn? 13 Why lays the cruel boar her branches waste? Why on her blooming fruits the bestials feast? 14 Return, O God, and let thy mercy shine On this thy drooping, desolated vine;; 15 By thee 'twas planted, and by thee grew strong; By thee in all her pride she flourish'd long; 16 But now destroying flames her boughs devour; Laid level with the ground, she blooms no more. 17 Indulgent father, kind assistance send; With thy almighty arm thy vine defend. O let the man, whom long thou didst adorn With pow'r, with honours, now no longer mourn; 18 Restore us life, and we'll thy name adore, And from thy sacred statutes turn no more. 19 All, all our griefs to heal, O Lord, is thine; The clouds disperse, when beams thy light divine.
