Lin was the son of Elias J. Cartwright (10 Nov 1852-4 Dec 1937) and Sarah Morgan (18 May 1858-1957).

Lin was editorial secretary of the Christian Board of Publication in St. Louis. From 1976 on, at least, he had lived in Columbia, Missouri.
