Staff Snapshot: Micah Ng

Web developer Micah Ng has been working fulltime for Hymnary since May 2018 after graduating from Calvin with degrees in computer science and mathematics. Prior to that, Micah was a Hymnary intern, working with the website since the summer of 2014 on a fulltime basis in the summers and parttime during the school years. He now works for both Hymnary.org and sister site preachingandworship.org.

In a typical day or week Micah's duties will span a wide range of activities. He works on everything from feature development to performance optimizations. He also designs systems and reviews code with his coworkers.

"I like the autonomy we have in deciding what implementation of a project is best," he says, "and I like then working on that project through completion. I also enjoy collaborating with my coworkers to troubleshoot problems or design new systems. I also like the amount of data and interconnected information that Hymnary contains; this allows me to apply my skills in automating production of more accurate and more relevant information."

It's also satisfying, Micah admits, "not seeing everything break" though he recognizes that sometimes things go south on websites and reacting to things breaking, and fixing them ASAP, is also part of the job!

Being part of something historical is also satisfying for Ng, a native of East Lansing, Mich.

"Hymnary and the related projects -- CCEL and Preaching and Worship -- together all work to gather and bring accessibility to the large body of Christian resources produced through history.  Without these projects many of these works would go lost and forgotten."

In his spare time, Micah enjoys reading, playing computer games, programming and nature photography.
