Based on Longfellow’s “I heard the bells on Christmas day,” this original unaccompanied piece—one of three in the set (see also “King of Kings,” G-6995, and “By-by Lullay,” G-6996)—adds an extended Latin refrain on the first full line of the “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” scored in a brisk 7/8. These three pieces all make a welcome contribution to the choral literature for Christmas.
