This setting of the Hyfrydol tune, for bass instrument (Cello or Bassoon) and piano, is ideal for more advanced players, and is cast in a simple ABA form. The ‘A’ section opens quietly with the solo instrument playing the tune twice above a chordal accompaniment. The contrasting ‘B’ section, a “dialogue” between the instruments, is based on a prominent rhythmic figure derived from the tune itself. The opening material then returns in a powerful and triumphant finish. A brief coda, which recalls the ‘B’ section, closes the piece.
