This set of continuous variations on the traditional English melody, TERRA BEATA, was commissioned for the 175th anniversary of the church which Maltbie Babcok, the author of the hymn text, served from 1882-1887. A lyrical andante, based on ascending eighth-note movement opens the work, and is followed by pastorale, dance, march, fanfare, and chorale variations. The ritornello of the opening variation concludes the work.
