Further Reflections on Confessions and Statements of Faith References

According to the confessions, Christian worshipers are called to continue in service. Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 12, Question and Answer 32 instructs us to think of ourselves as “a member of Christ…[who] share in his anointing.” So we profess “I am anointed to confess his name, to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, to strive with a free conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for eternity.” We serve him with good works, “…so that with our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us, so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ” (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 32, Question and Answer 86). And so we are moved to “…embrace God’s mission in [our] neighborhoods and in the world...” (Our World Belongs to God, paragraph 41). Christians, therefore, leave worship believing that “to follow this Lord is to serve him wherever we are without fitting in, light in darkness, salt in a spoiling world” (Our World Belongs to God paragraph 43).

Additional Prayers

An Acclamation

One day, Jesus will judge the living and the dead.
Meanwhile, we will walk with God.
One day, justice will roll down like waters.
Meanwhile, we will walk with God.
One day, justice and peace will embrace.
Meanwhile, we will walk with God.
One day, Jesus will judge the living and the dead.
Meanwhile, we will go rejoicing till the kingdom has come. Amen.

Hymn Story/Background

This song was included in Sing with the World: Global Songs for Children, a collection prepared by John Bell and Alison Adam and published as a songbook with CD by GIA Publications, Inc. in 2008. In her introduction to this song, Alison Adam wrote: “This song from Swaziland is excellent for ending a time together. Its themes of commitment and sending, combined with his upbeat nature, make it ideal for singing while processing out after a time of worship or other gathering. This is another song that inspires movement—how can we sing “we will wlak with God” with moving our bodies? Percussion is the best accompaniment to this song; use piano or guitar only if necessary” (p. 52).

Author and Composer Information

Alison Adam is a member of the Iona Community (based in Scotland) and her work is very much an expression of the Community's commitment to the renewal of worship. She works to enable churches and organizations to develop a more participative and engaging style of worship, which is relevant to today's world and yet still maintaining a strong liturgical style. Alison worked with John Bell and the Wild Goose Resource Group for 7 years and since moving to London in 2002 is now working freelance under the title 'WORSHIP WORKS'. She was a member of the Wild Goose Worship Group from its inception in 1984, has featured in all their recordings, and continues to work in association with Wild Goose from time to time. Formerly an elementary school teacher and youth worker, Alison has worked with all ages in her career and continues to use these skills in her work. Alison has a particular passion for getting folks singing using simply her hands and voice and the engaging "Wild Goose" style which has a crowd singing something African in four parts before they realize they're doing it! Global music plays a significant part in Alison's work, as she believes it connects us to the Body and to the body, as well as liberating us from the page when we sing!
