98. Let Us Alone

1 “Let us alone” hear the evil spirits cry,
As the voice of the Savior spake
To the poor afflicted, that stood so meekly by,
Who the bands of sin would break;
And they all came forth at His blest command,
And his wondrous power was shown,
For the blind did see and the lame did walk,
While the spirits said “Let us alone.”

Refrain:
“Let us alone,” “Let us alone,”
“What have we to do with thee?”
‘Tis the old, old cry as in sin we die,
While His help would make us free.

2 Still do we cling to the evil in our hearts,
And we hear how the tempters laugh,
And we feel the sting of the quickly flying darts,
As the cup of death we quaff;
For our eyes are blind and we cannot see
How for sin He would still atone,
How His life He gave that we might be free,
While the spirits said “Let us alone.” [Refrain]

3 Are you content, oh! my brother, thus to live,
While the days and the years go by,
Have you no desire for the pardon He can give,
Are you willing thus to die;
Bring your heart to Him let Him make it whole,
Let Him take away the stain,
That is weighing down unto death your soul,
With this cry of “Let us alone.” [Refrain]
