131. The Royal Servant

1 Come within that upper chamber,
See the King of love and peace,
Rising from the paschal supper,
Lo, he takes a servant’s place.
Now he lays aside his mantle,
And to show his love complete,
Humbly bowing there before them,
Washes his disciples’ feet.

2 Will we keep our Lord’s example
And his pure command obey?
Must we not be meek and humble,
Follow in his holy way?
If we call him Lord and Master,
And profess to love him here,
We must his commandments honor
If we’d prove our love sincere.

3 Jesus says, “Ye shall be happy
If these things ye know and do,”
But if ye are found rebelling,
He will turn away from you.
Lord, we love thee as our leader,
And we know thy law is good,
So in meekness we obey thee,
As thy word declares we should.
