Note: The melody is a traditional French Christmas piece, whose traditional text is "Les anges dans nos campagnes". Slightly different versions of the melody were popularized in the United States (under the tune name GLORIA) for an anonymous anglicization of the French text ("Angels we have heard on high") and in Britain (under the tune name IRIS) for a hymn ("Angels from the realms of glory") by James Montgomery. (That hymn was first published, in 1816, in The Sheffield Irish, a newspaper edited by Montgomery.) In the US Montgomery's hymn is most often sung to the tune REGENT SQUARE. And a hundred years after Montgomery, George Ratcliffe Woodward made a new Englishing of the French carol, "Shepherds in the field abiding", which M. C. Butler put into Esperanto. I have decided to view the melodies in question, "Gloria" and "Iris", as one tune, and to call it "GLORIA (IRIS)".
