628. Praise God, You Angel Hosts Above

1 Praise God, you angel hosts above,
who stand in heaven's light;
and praise the Lord, you saints below,
who in God's praise delight.

2 By all his creatures let his name
be honored and adored;
let all that breathe in praise unite
to glorify the Lord.

This summary of Psalm 150 was adapted from a text first found in the 1912 Psalter. Like the psalm, "Praise God" invites the angels above, saints below, and all creation to glorify the Lord.

Liturgical Use:
As a doxology--Psalm 150 is the great doxology of the entire book of Psalms.

Tune Information:

See PHH 215 for a discussion of WINCHESTER OLD.

This hymn becomes a festive doxology when sung in parts with suitably strong organ accompaniment. Consider using the descant at 215 for the second stanza. Because the original psalm calls upon various instruments to praise the Lord, on a festive occasion add instruments like trumpets, drums, and cymbals.
